This bulletin provides the procedure to reprogram the Power Slide Door (PSD) control module with updated software in certain 2022-2023MY Carnival (KA4) vehicles produced from January 4, 2021 through February 22, 2023 in order to increase customers’ awareness that the PSD is closing. The updated software will add two (2) warning chimes when the power sliding door begins to open or close and will also change the door speed to move more slowly as the door approaches its latching point. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to apply the improved logic to the ‘PSD’ system using the KDS ECU Upgrade function as described in this bulletin. For confirmation that the latest reflash has been applied to a vehicle you are working on, verify the ROM ID using the table on page(s) 3 of this bulletin.

Connect the VCI-II to the OBD-II connector, located under the driver’s side of the instrument panel.
2.
With the ignition ON, turn ON the KDS tablet. Select ‘KDS’ from the home screen.
3.
Confirm communication with VCI (A) and then configure the vehicle (B) using the ‘AUTO VIN’ (C) feature.

Select ‘ECU Upgrade’.

The KDS will check the server for recently uploaded Events and then automatically download Upgrade Event #664.

Select Auto Mode.

If a “Communication Fail” screen appears, verify that the VCI-II and KDS are communicating properly. Select ‘OK’ and restart the from step 4.

When instructed on the KDS, turn the ignition OFF for ten (10) seconds then back on. Select ‘OK’ to continue.

Once the upgrade is complete, select ‘OK’ to finalize the procedure.

Within the ECU Upgrade screen displayed, select Manual Mode.
2.
Select the PSD system under the System selection menu. Select Upgrade Event #664 and select Upgrade to continue.
3.
Select the appropriate control unit part number with reference to the ROM ID Information Table on page 3, and select OK.
4.
Enter the appropriate password from the Manual Mode password table above and select OK.
5.
The upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.

Kia has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety.
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kia America, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022-2023 MY Carnival vehicles. The defect can result in a power sliding door closing on a vehicle occupant, thereby increasing the risk of injury. Our records indicate that you own or lease one of the potentially affected vehicles.
What Is The Problem?
The power sliding door (PSD) auto-reverse feature in your vehicle may not activate in all situations. A PSD that does not activate may close on a vehicle occupant, which can increase the risk of injury.
Kia Will Reprogram the Power Sliding Door Control Module Free of Charge At No Cost To You.
Kia dealers will reprogram the power sliding door control module with an updated software that results in two operational changes:
1. Adds two (2) warning chimes when the power sliding door begins to open or close; and
2. Changes the door speed to move more slowly as the door approaches its latching point.
This recall will be performed free of charge at no cost to you. The estimated time required to perform this recall will be approximately one (1) hour. We recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize your inconvenience.

• In the interest of the safety of your passengers, as well as your own safety, contact your authorized Kia dealer to arrange for the recall to be performed on your vehicle.
• To prevent injury, make sure no body parts are in the way of the sliding door when closing. DO NOT leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle as they may operate the power sliding door in a manner that could result in injury to themselves or others.

Kia has become aware of a small number of injuries during closure of the PSD. Although a cause related to a manufacturing design issue has not been identified, Kia believes the cause of injuries may be associated with customers’ unawareness that the PSD is closing. As a result, Kia is conducting this recall in an effort to increase customers’ awareness that the PSD is closing in order to mitigate the risk of injury. Contact between the PSD and a vehicle occupant during closure can increase the risk of injury.
All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer. Dealers will reprogram the power sliding door control module with an updated software that adds two (2) warning chimes when the power sliding door begins to open or close. The updated software will also change the door speed to move more slowly as the door approaches its latching point.
The Technical Service Bulletin that provides vehicle inspection and repair procedures, affected VIN production range, and warranty claim information will be posted on the Kia Global Information System (KGIS) at www.kiatechinfo.com in the week of April 6, 2023.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with
instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer. Dealers will reprogram the power sliding door control module with an updated software that adds two (2) warning chimes when the power sliding door begins to open or close. The updated software will also change the door speed to move more slowly as the door approaches its latching point. Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 10, 2022. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The remedy component has updated power sliding door software. The updated power sliding door control module software was applied to 2023MY Carnival vehicles that were manufactured beginning on March 1, 2023. Model year 2023 Carnival vehicles produced from February 23, 2023 to February 28, 2023 received the updated software prior to being distributed to Kia dealers and thus are not within the scope of this action.
