Summary
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2024 Sorento vehicles. The motor driven power steering (MDPS) wiring harness may be incorrectly assembled, which can result in a loss of power steering assist.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and repair, or replace the MDPS wiring harness as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 7, 2024. Kia’s number for this recall is SC309.

MDPS WIRE HARNESS INSPECTION AND REPAIR (SC309)
This bulletin provides information to inspect Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) main wire harness retaining clip location and, if necessary, repair or replace the MDPS wire harness on certain 2024MY Sorento (MQ4a) vehicles produced from January 7, 2024 through February 28, 2024. The MDPS wire harness may become damaged due to improper assembly by the supplier. This may result in either a reduction or loss of power steering assist. A loss of power steering assist requires higher steering effort by the driver, especially at low speeds, which increases the risk of a crash.
The replacement wire harness assembly is not yet available. When it becomes available, this TSB will be updated with the part and labor op code information accordingly. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

A2. Certain 2024 MY Sorento vehicles manufactured from January 7, 2024 through February 28, 2024.

Q4. What is the concern with the MDPS wire harness?
A4. The Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) wire harness in the subject vehicles may become damaged due to improper assembly by the supplier. This may result in either a reduction or loss of power steering assist. A loss of power steering assist requires higher steering effort by the driver, especially at low speeds, which increases the risk of a crash. Customers may experience illumination of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) warning light.

A5. Kia dealers will inspect the MDPS wire harness and, if necessary, re-route the harness to the correct location. In addition, if any damage is found, the MDPS wire harness will either be repaired or, if necessary, replaced with a new one.

A6. All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to contact their authorized Kia dealer to have the recall campaign performed beginning on May 7, 2024.

Evaluation of exemplar vehicle with artificially disconnected circuits confirms condition does not result in loss of motive power.

Kia NA Safety Office and supplier perform exemplar vehicle test with artificially disconnected circuits to evaluate any potential safety consequence and determine there is a potential for a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist depending on whether the MDPS communication circuits or MDPS power circuit is disconnected. If complete loss of steering assist occurs, manual steering is still available. The condition does not occur in unintended self-steering.

Kia NA Safety Office field data analysis finds no additional incidents other than the two (2) previously identified incidents. No crashes, injuries, fatalities, or fires. Kia Georgia and Kia HQ confirm potentially affected population with direct VIN traceability and inform Kia NA Safety Office.

Under the dash (driver side) lower crash pad, locate the steering wire harness and the “L” bracket shown.
2.
NOTE: The “L” bracket has two holes.
Confirm the steering harness clip location:

Correct location (OK)

Incorrect location (NG)

If the harness is secured to the correct (OK) bracket hole (1), then no further action is required.
•
If the harness is secured to the incorrect (NG) bracket hole (2), proceed to the ‘Repair Procedure’ on page 3.

MDPS WIRE HARNESS INSPECTION SUBJECT: AND REPAIR (SC309)
Repair Procedure:
1.
Using a pair of thin pliers, press in the harness clip tabs from behind to detach the clip from the incorrect “L” bracket hole location (2).
2.
Relocate the clip by inserting and securing it into the correct “L” bracket hole (1) location.
NOTE: Push in and pull 2-3 times to confirm it is clipped in securely.

If minor damage to the wire harness insulated wrapping is present (as shown), use a 6” inch strip of Tesa (or 3M vinyl) electrical tape to repair and insulate the open area.
If major damage to the wire harness insulated wrapping/wires is present (as shown), park the vehicle until the replacement wire harness assembly becomes available.
3c.
If no damage to the wire harness insulation is present, no further action is required.
Refer to the ‘Inspection Procedure’ “L” bracket locations 1 & 2 on page 2.

Kia dealers may use such owner information for the sole purpose of conducting and performing this safety recall campaign, and for no other purpose.
