Summary
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2024 EV9 vehicles. The front passenger seat belt retractor cover may not be secured properly, which can cause the front passenger seat belt automatic locking retractor (ALR) and emergency locking retractor (ELR) to not operate as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 208, “Occupant Crash Protection” and 209, “Seat Belt Assemblies.”
Remedy
Dealers will replace the front passenger seat belt assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 5, 2024. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC312.

Kia NA issues Quality Information Report to Kia Corporation (Kia HQ) for further investigation. No additional field incidents identified.
Kia HQ works with supplier and informs Kia NA Safety Office of investigation results identifying front passenger seatbelt retractor not properly secured by supplier. Kia HQ provides Kia NA Safety Office with affected VINs based on review of supplier and vehicle production records.
Kia NA Safety Office confirms no additional field incidents related to this issue.

Kia NA conducts regulatory review and identifies that an automatic locking retractor (ALR) and/or emergency locking retractor (ELR) that does not operate as intended is considered a noncompliance with the requirements of section S7.1 of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 and section S4.3(i) and (j) of FMVSS 209.
Kia NA Safety Office decides to conduct a noncompliance recall of certain 2024MY EV9 vehicles. No crashes, injuries or fatalities.

An improperly secured retractor cover can cause the front passenger seatbelt automatic locking retractor (ALR) and emergency locking retractor (ELR) to not operate as intended. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of section S7.1 of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 and section S4.3(i) and (j) of FMVSS 209.
