Summary
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2024 Kia Sportage vehicles. The circuit board in the motor-driven power steering assembly may short circuit, resulting in a loss of power steering assist.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the motor-driven power steering electric power pack, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 6, 2024. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC319.

Kia Georgia and Kia Corporation (Kia HQ) visit supplier to investigate potential cause of issue.
Kia NA Safety Office receives root cause information from Kia HQ identifying a solder flux contamination issue at the supplier which can result in a loss of power steering assist.
Kia NA Safety Office conducts field data analysis and identifies a total of two (2) reports of loss of power steering assist consistent with condition identified by Kia HQ (dates of receipt 5/20/2024—5/21/2024).

Description of the Defect : During manufacturing by the supplier, the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) power pack may have been manufactured with contaminated flux. A contaminated PCB can result in an electrical short circuit. If this occurs, the MDPS power pack may become inoperative resulting in a loss of power steering assist.

Description of Remedy Program : All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with
instructions to bring their vehicle to a Kia dealer. Kia dealers will be instructed to replace the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) power pack with a new one. Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 1, 2024. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The remedy component does not contain any contaminated flux. 2024MY Sportage vehicles manufactured beginning on 5/24/2024 are equipped with an uncontaminated MDPS power pack.
