Summary
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2023 Sportage vehicles. The side curtain air bags may have been twisted during installation.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and reinstall the side curtain air bags as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 28, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC257.

CURTAIN AIRBAG INSPECTION/REINSTALLATION (SC257)
This bulletin provides information to inspect both LH and RH curtain airbags and, if necessary, to reinstall the curtain airbags(s) on certain 2023MY Sportage (NQ5a) vehicles produced at Kia Georgia from January 12, 2022 (SOP) through November 17, 2022. The subject vehicles are equipped with curtain airbags that may have been assembled with a twisted condition during vehicle assembly. As a result, the curtain airbag(s) may not deploy properly in a crash sufficient to warrant such a deployment. An improper deployment of the curtain airbag(s) increases the risk of injury in a crash. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to inspect both RH and LH curtain airbags in the affected vehicles for a twisted/folded condition and, if necessary, reinstall properly. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

Certain 2023 MY Sportage vehicles manufactured at a Kia assembly plant in the U.S. from January 12, 2022 to November 17, 2022.

The side curtain airbag(s) may have been assembled with a twisted condition during vehicle production. As a result, the side curtain airbag(s) may not deploy properly in a crash sufficient to warrant such a deployment. Kia R&D Center engineers attend FMVSS 226 compliance testing conducted by NHTSA’s Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance of a 2023MY Kia Sportage produced on 9/15/2022 at Kia Georgia. Following the test, Kia R&D informs Kia North America (Kia NA) Safety Office that the driver’s side curtain airbag did not properly deploy. Cause of improper deployment unknown.

Kia NA Safety Office conducts field data analysis of all 2023MY Kia Sportage variants and identifies no data involving a similar improper deployment.
November 18, 2022
Kia NA decides to recall certain 2023MY Kia Sportage as a precautionary measure. No fatalities, injuries, crashes or fires.
