HECU INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT AND FUSE REPLACEMENT (SC253)
This bulletin provides information relating to the inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) in the 2008-2009MY Sportage (KM) vehicles produced from August 9, 2007 through May 13, 2009 that were previously recalled under Kia’s Campaign SC138. In addition, the two (2) ‘40A’ fuses for the HECU circuits will be replaced with new ‘30A’ and ‘20A’ fuses to prevent an over-current condition in the HECU’s electrical circuit board to mitigate the risk of a fire. An engine compartment fire originating from the area of the HECU may occur while the subject vehicle is being driven or while parked after replacement of the HECU connector cover under the previously launched SC138 recall. Although the exact cause is unknown, it is believed that an internal electrical short circuit can occur from foreign substances remaining on the printed circuit board. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to inspect the HECU and its wiring harness and connectors for proper functionality and condition and, if necessary, to replace the HECU with a new one. In addition, dealers are to replace the HECU ‘40A’ ABS1 and ABS2 fuses with new ‘20A’ ABS1 and ‘30A’ ABS2 fuses and install new fuse labels. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs. NOTE: SC253 is a new recall in addition to the previous launched SC138.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.
NOTICE
For the vehicles that have NOT completed SC138 during SC253 visit: SC138 needs to be completed first. The re-inspection of HECU Connector & Wire Harness is not required as it was part of SC138.
DO NOT replace the HECU assembly a second time. All replaced HECU’s will be collected for inspection and are subject to Warranty review and chargeback.
A Vehicle Diagnosis Number (VDN) must be created prior to replacement. If a VDN is not created, Parts Ordering and Warranty claim submission issues WILL occur.

GROUP MODEL Safety Recall Campaign 2008-2009MY Sportage (KM) NUMBER DATE SC253 December 2022 SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN HECU INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT AND FUSE REPLACEMENT (SC253) This bulletin provides information relating to the inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) in the 2008-2009MY Sportage (KM) vehicles produced from August 9, 2007 through May 13, 2009 that were previously recalled under Kia’s Campaign SC138. To assure complete customer satisfaction, always remember to refer to WebDCS Warranty Coverage (validation) Inquiry Screen (Service → Warranty Coverage → Warranty Coverage Inquiry) for a list of any additional campaigns that may need to be performed on the vehicle before returning it to the customer. NOTICE There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. An engine compartment fire originating from the area of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may occur while the vehicle is being driven or while parked following replacement of the HECU connector cover under 16V815 (SC138). A fire increases the risk of injury. Customers may experience illumination of ABS warning light, burning/melting smell, and/or smoke from engine compartment. Dealers will inspect the HECU and its wiring harness and connectors for proper functionality and condition. If necessary, dealers will replace the HECU with a new one. In addition, dealers will replace the fuses for the HECU circuits with different capacities to mitigate the fire risk. Kia recommends that vehicle owners park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repair has been performed. Your Service Manager was sent a copy of the owner notification letter and a Q&A guide for recall questions both of which describe the issue and information on how to access the list of affected vehicles. Kia will start mailing notices to the affected vehicle owners beginning on December 22, 2022 What Should You Do? Please make personnel in your dealership familiar with the details of this Safety Recall Campaign so they may properly address recall related issues and promptly respond to customer inquiries and requests.
