) is recalling certain 2012-2013 Optima vehicles. The right and left headliner plates may not be secured properly, which can result in the plates detaching in the event of a side curtain air bag deployment.
Remedy
Dealers will secure the headliner plates, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2022. Owners may contact Kia

ADHESIVE TAPE APPLICATION ON HEADLINER PLATES (SC245)
This bulletin provides information to further secure the headliner plates with adhesive tape on certain 2012-2013MY Optima (QF) vehicles produced at Kia
Georgia from August 12, 2011 through September 27, 2013. The subject vehicles are equipped with headliner plates designed as part of the energy absorbing structure of the headliner. Under certain circumstances, the headliner plate(s) may detach from the headliner upon deployment of the side curtain airbag(s), increasing the risk of injury to an occupant. If the headliner plate(s) become detached upon deployment of the side curtain airbag(s), an occupant may be injured. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to add the supplied adhesive tape in the specified locations. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.
Repair Procedure:
1. Carefully remove the headliner clips (A).
NOTICE
Use a non marring trim removal tool (such as Snap on ® Part Number PBN5 or equivalent) to avoid damaging trim pieces.
2. Remove the front pillar trim (B) by referring to “Body (Interior and Exterior) → Interior → Interior Trim → Repair procedures (Front Pillar Trim)” in the applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.
CAUTION
- W e ar disposable latex gloves to prevent soiling the headliner.
- Be careful not to damage trim panels or covers while removing/installing
Note: Fasteners/Clip replacement:
- Replace 85815 3S100 Clip/Tether. (May not be re-used)
- Replace 82315 33020 Fastener (Only if broken or damaged).
TECH TIP
When the front pillar trim is pulled away from pillar, the clip /tether may be cut in the area shown so it may be removed. The remaining clip in the trim can be twisted off once the trim is removed from the vehicle.
3. Refer to “Body (Interior and Exterior) → Interior → Roof Trim → Repair procedures” in the Shop Manual on KGIS to remove the following parts:

4. Partially detach the upper section of the door weather strip (H).
5a. Carefully and gently pull down the headliner from the (LH and RH) front door openings to expose the metal plates (I) in the front areas shown.
5b. Note: Insert a pair of 1.5” (40mm) thick foam blocks (J) to prevent damage to headliner and provide working space between the headliner and vehicle roof.
6a. Using a ruler/measuring tape, measure the metal plate and add 1” inch to the front and rear of the metal plate and ¾” inch to both sides of the metal plate.
6b. Cut out a piece of the adhesive tape to cover the plate including excess area measured as noted above. The adhesive tape will exceed coverage over the metal plate shown.
7a. Adhere the tape over the plate and carefully apply pressure not to exceed the headliner from lowering below the foam pad thickness of 1.5” (40mm).
7b. Note: Ensure no excess adhesive tape is exposed from headliner edge area.
TECH TIP
Use one hand to apply downward pressure and the other hand to push upward, against the applied pressure area.
8. Reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
Note: Replace any broken clips that may have broken during removal.

Cut out a piece of the adhesive tape to cover the plate including excess area measured as noted above. The adhesive tape will exceed coverage over the metal plate shown. Adhere the tape over the plate and carefully apply pressure not to exceed the headliner from lowering below the foam pad thickness of 1.5” (40mm). Note: Ensure no excess adhesive tape is exposed from headliner edge area. 8. Reinstall all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
