NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V344
Manufacturer Kia Motors America
Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 2,761
Summary
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2022 Telluride vehicles. Excess adhesive in a circuit board within the instrument cluster may cause the instrument cluster display screen to be blank. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (SC237)
This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the instrument cluster assembly on certain 2022MY Telluride (ON) vehicles equipped with the 3.5-inch Mono TFT LCD or Supervision 7-inch TFT LCD cluster, produced from September 9, 2021 through March 30, 2022. Due to an incorrect die applicator setting at the supplier, excess adhesive was applied to a circuit board within the instrument cluster. Excess adhesive may lead to a poor electrical connection and cause the LCD information display screen to go blank resulting in the driver’s inability to see the odometer. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the visibility requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101, “Controls and Displays”. This condition does not affect the functionality of the vehicle’s underlying systems or dedicated telltale/warning lamps. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to replace the instrument cluster. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.
Repair Procedure:
1. Note the original vehicle mileage (A) before removing the instrument cluster.
2. Replace the instrument cluster (B) by referring to “Body Electrical System → Indicators and Gauges → Instrument Cluster → Repair procedures” in the applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.
NOTICE
Use a non marring trim removal tool (such as Snap on ® Part Number PBN5 or equivalent) to avoid damaging trim pieces.
3. Reassemble all removed parts in reverse order of disassembly.
IMPORTANT
Be sure to follow the CLU Variant Coding procedure in the Shop Manual.
4. Confirm proper operation of the instrument cluster.

2022MY Telluride Blank Instrument Cluster LCD Screen
Basis of Safety Defect Determination 573.6(c)(6) [Amended]
November 17, 2021
Through normal monitoring of field data, Kia North America (Kia NA) Product Quality identifies two (2) Techline cases regarding blank instrument cluster LCD screen concern.
November 18-December 19, 2021
Kia NA Product Quality conducts preliminary review of potential causes but could not duplicate issue or identify cause. Kia NA Product Quality and Kia Georgia (Kia GA) begin to collect instrument cluster assemblies. Kia GA evaluates collected parts but is unable to duplicate concern.
December 20, 2021February 23, 2022
Kia GA seeks assistance from supplier and sends instrument cluster assemblies to supplier for further evaluation. On February 21, 2022 supplier identifies condition may be related to an incorrect setting of the die adhesive applicator which could cause excess adhesive to be applied to the circuit board installed within the instrument cluster. Kia GA requests list of potentially affected parts from supplier to conduct additional analysis.
March 8, 2022
Supplier identifies suspect lot issue and provides Kia GA with serial numbers of potentially affected parts.
March 16, 2022-April 21, 2022
Kia GA conducts X-ray of warranty returned parts and evaluates whether its analysis is consistent with the excess adhesive condition described by supplier. Kia GA also reviews warranty claims and information from supplier to confirm suspected affected lot.
April 22, 2022
Kia GA notifies Kia NA Safety Office of instrument cluster information display issue.
May 9, 2022
Kia NA evaluates any potential noncompliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and on May 9, 2022 concludes the inability to see the odometer on the LCD screen results in the noncompliance with the visibility requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101, §S5.1.2.
May 10, 2022
Kia NA decides to conduct a noncompliance FMVSS 101 recall. No fatalities, injuries, crashes or fires.
May 17, 2022
Kia NA submits noncompliance recall notice (Recall 22V344) to NHTSA for blank LCD concern involving the 2022MY Telluride equipped with 3.5″ LCD screens.
May 18-June 17, 2022
During the development of the recall remedy part for Recall 22V344, supplier identifies that instrument cluster assemblies equipped with the 7” screen may also contain excess adhesive on the circuit board. Kia GA works with supplier to evaluate issue and scope of potentially affected vehicles.
June 21, 2022
Kia GA notifies Kia NA Safety Office that certain 2022MY Telluride vehicles equipped with a 7” LCD screen potentially contain same blank LCD screen concern as previously recalled vehicles under 22V344.
June 24, 2022
Kia NA Safety reviews field data and confirms no injuries or crashes due to blank screen condition.
June 27, 2022
Kia NA decides to expand the scope of the current FMVSS 101 noncompliance recall to include 2022MY Telluride vehicles equipped with a 7” LCD screen. No injuries or crashes related to the non-compliance.

SC237 July 11, 2022 ATTENTION: ALL DEALER PRINCIPALS Kia America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Noncompliance Safety Recall Campaign on certain 2022 MY Telluride vehicles manufactured from September 9, 2021 through March 30, 2022. The vehicle’s instrument cluster contains an LCD screen which displays certain information. Due to an incorrect die applicator setting at the supplier, excess adhesive was applied to a circuit board within the instrument cluster. Excess adhesive may lead to a poor electrical connection and cause the LCD information display screen to go blank resulting in the driver’s inability to see the odometer. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the visibility requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101, “Controls and Displays.” This condition does not affect the functionality of the vehicle’s underlying systems or dedicated telltale/warning lamps. The subject condition may increase the risk of a crash. Kia will replace the instrument cluster assembly with a new one. Your Service Manager was sent a copy of the owner notification letter and a Q&A guide for recall questions both of which describe the issue and information on how to access the list of affected vehicles. Kia will start mailing notices to the affected vehicle owners on July 15, 2022 What Should You Do? Please make certain the appropriate personnel in your dealership are familiar with the details of this recall campaign to ensure proper responses to customer inquiries and requests to have the campaign performed on their vehicles. NHTSA ADVISORY: It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect is remedied. LEGAL PRIVACY LIABILITY NOTICE: Pursuant to the terms of the Dealer Sales and Service Agreement and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley federal consumer privacy act, you are required to keep confidential any and all information and documents provided to you by Kia America, Inc. or generated by you in the conduct of carrying out work under that Agreement regarding Kia vehicle purchasers and owners, including but not limited to warranty claim information. Kia dealers may use such owner information for the sole purpose of conducting and performing this noncompliance safety recall campaign, and for no other purpose.
