LOW PRESSURE FUEL FEED TUBE REPLACEMENT (SC228)

This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the low-pressure fuel feed tube assembly on certain 2013-2014MY Optima (QF) vehicles produced at Kia Georgia (KaGA) from November 15, 2012 through December 18, 2013. The remedy for previous recall 20V100 (Kia’s internal campaign no. SC187) may not have been properly performed in all cases. In some cases, the low-pressure fuel tube may not have been properly repaired with heat protective tape after inspection revealed no damage or leak. In some other cases, the low-pressure fuel tube was repaired with heat protective tape instead of being replaced even though damage might be present. In either case, a subsequent fuel leak can occur. Leaking fuel increases the risk of a fire. Dealers are to replace the low-pressure fuel tube with a new improved one. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

NOTICE

There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

Q2. What vehicles are affected by the recall?

Certain 2013-2014 MY Optima vehicles manufactured at Kia Georgia from November 15, 2012 through December 18, 2013 that received the heat protective tape repair under NHTSA Recall 20V100 (Kia internal campaign no. SC187).

Q3. How many customer vehicles are affected by this recall?

Approximately 72,848 vehicles.

Q4. What is the concern with the Low-Pressure Fuel Tube?

The remedy for previous recall 20V100 may not have been properly performed in all cases by dealers.

Q8.How was the issue discovered?

Through the regular monitoring of field information.

Q9. Will this cost vehicle owners any money?

No. Kia will perform the recall repair at no cost to the customer.

February 21, 2020Kia Motors America, Inc. (KMA) files recall of 2013-2014MY Optima produced at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) due to fuel leak from low pressure fuel tube (20V100).

May 15, 2020

Kia amends its 573 notice for recall 20V100 with updated information, including recall repair remedy. Dealers instructed to inspect the low-pressure fuel tube for damage and/or leaking. If damage and/or leaking is found, the low-pressure tube is to be replaced with a new one. If no damage or leaking is found, a heatprotective tape is to be installed at the connection between the lowpressure fuel tube and fuel pump for added protection.

Kia North America (Kia NA) Product Quality department issues report identifying a fuel leak in a 2013MY Optima following completion of 20V100 recall heat protective tape application repair. Kia NA Product Quality department requests KMMG investigate issue. Issue may be caused by quick connect fitting rotation at GDI pump.

December 9, 2020

Based on understanding of quick connect fitting rotation at GDI pump, Kia NA issues revised Technical Service Bulletin for Recall 20V100 instructing dealers to inspect rotation of quick connect fitting and replace low pressure fuel tube if fitting rotates with low resistance.

November 11 – December 17, 2021

As part of its regular monitoring of field data, Kia NA Safety Office conducts preliminary review of post-recall repairs involving fuel tube leaks after heat-protective tape was applied.

December 2021 – January 24, 2022

Kia NA Safety Office reviews possible causes of post recall repair fuel leaks following application of the heat protective tape with Kia Corporation (Kia HQ).
