Summary
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2014 Soul vehicles. The front air bags may not deploy during a crash if the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) loses communication with the front impact sensors.
Remedy
Dealers will update the ACU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 4, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC229.

AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU) SOFTWARE LOGIC IMPROVEMENT (SC229)
This bulletin provides information to update the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) software logic on 2014MY Soul (PS) produced from July 21, 2013 through June 20, 2014. In the rare event that communication to the ACU from both the left and right front impact sensors is simultaneously lost early in a severe crash, before frontal airbag deployment is commended by the ACU, the front airbags will not deploy. Non-deployment of the frontal airbags increases the risk of injury.
Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to update the ACU software logic. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bullet in.
ECU Upgrade Procedure:
To correct this condition, the ECU should be reprogrammed using the KDS download, as described in this bulletin.

NOTICE
- Confirm a fully charged battery (12.3 volts or higher is necessary) is used or utilize a fully charged jump starter box connected to the battery.
- Ensure the KDS GDS is sufficiently charged at 60% or higher prior to reflash.
- All ECU upgrades must be performed with the ignition set to the ‘ON’ position unless otherwise stated.
- Damaged VCI II units should not be used and promptly replaced.
- Be careful not to disconnect the VCI-II connected to the vehicle during the ECU upgrade procedure.
- DO NOT start the engine during ECU upgrade.
- DO NOT turn the ignition key ‘OFF’ or interrupt the power supply during ECU upgrade.
- When the ECU upgrade is completed, turn the ignition ‘OFF’ and wait 10 seconds before starting the engine.
- ONLY use approved ECU upgrade software designated for the correct application.
IMPORTANT
It is recommended to ALWAYS check the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to locate the ECU Part Number respective to Auto/Manual Mode ROM IDs. DO NOT reference the parts label affixed to the ECU.
NOTICE
Before attempting an ECU upgrade on any Kia model, make sure to first determine whether the applicable model is equipped with an immobilizer security system. Failure to follow proper procedures may cause the PCM to become inoperative after the upgrade and any claims associated with this repair may be subject to chargeback.

To verify the vehicle is affected, be sure to check the Calibration Identification of the vehicle’s ECM ROM ID and reference the Information Table as necessary.
NOTICE
Prior to performing the ECU upgrade, be sure to check that the KDS is fully charged.
1. Connect the VCI-II to the OBD-II connector, located under the driver’s side of the instrument panel.
NOTICE
The ECU upgrade function on KDS operates wirelessly. It is not necessary to perform the upgrade via USB cable.
2. With the ignition ON, turn ON the KDS tablet. Select ‘KDS’ from the home screen.
3. Confirm communication with VCI (A) and then configure the vehicle (B) using the ‘AUTO VIN’ (C) feature.
4. Select ‘ECU Upgrade’.
5. The KDS will check the server for recently uploaded Events and then automatically download Upgrade Event(s) #606.
NOTICE
The vehicle must be identified in Vehicle Selection to download an Event for that vehicle.
6. Select Auto Mode.
CAUTION
Do NOT attempt to perform a Manual Mode upgrade UNLESS Auto Mode fails. Always follow the instructions given on the KDS in either Auto or Manual mode.
7. Select AIRBAG system and the corresponding software event for the vehicle.

8. The ECU upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph. Upgrade part (1/2) (E) will download the upgrade event to the VCI-II. Upgrade part (2/2) (F) will upgrade the ECU.
CAUTION
Do not touch the system buttons (like ‘Back’, ‘Home’, ‘etc.’) while performing ECU Upgrade.
9. If a “Communication Fail” screen appears, verify that the VCI-II and KDS are communicating properly. Select ‘OK’ and restart the from step 4.
NOTICE
If an error notice continues to appear or if the upgrade cannot be performed, DO NOT disconnect the KDS/VCI II. Contact GIT America Help Desk at (888) 542 4371 or Techline.
10. When instructed on the KDS, turn the ignition OFF for ten (10) seconds then back on. Select ‘OK’ to continue.
11. Once the upgrade is complete, select ‘OK’ to finalize the procedure.
12. When prompted, select ‘YES’ to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and erase any DTCs stored such as EPS, ESC, and TPMS that may have been set during the upgrade.
13. Start the engine to confirm normal operation of the vehicle.
Manual Upgrade Procedure:
NOTICE
The manual upgrade should ONLY be performed if the automatic upgrade fails
If the automatic upgrade fails, DO NOT turn the ignition ‘OFF’. Proceed to the ‘Manual Mode’ upgrade with the ignition ‘ON’

1. Within the ECU Upgrade screen displayed, select Manual Mode.
2. Select the AIRBAG system under the System selection menu. Select Upgrade Event #606 and select Upgrade to continue.
3. Select the appropriate control unit part number with reference to the ROM ID Information Table on page 3, and select OK.
4. Enter the appropriate password from the Manual Mode password table above and select OK.
5. The upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.
6. When instructed on the KDS, turn the ignition OFF for ten (10) seconds then back on. Select OK.
7. Once the upgrade is complete, select OK to finalize the procedure.
8. When prompted, select YES to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and erase any DTCs stored such as EPS, ESC, and TPMS that may have been set during the upgrade.
9. Start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.

Kia America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Safety Recall
Campaign to remedy a defect that impairs the vehicle’s airbag function.
Q2. What vehicles are affected by the recall?
All 2014 MY Soul vehicles manufactured from July 21, 2013 through June 20, 2014.
Q3. How many customer vehicles are affected by this recall?
Approximately 128,280 vehicles
Q4. What is the concern with the ACU?
In the rare event that communication to the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) from both the left and right front impact
sensors is simultaneously lost early in a severe crash, before frontal airbag deployment is commanded by the ACU,
the front airbags will not deploy. Nondeployment of the frontal airbags increases the risk of injury.
Q5. Can you describe the recall campaign and fix?
Dealers will be instructed to update the ACU software to an improved version that will enable deployment of the
frontal airbags even if communication from both left and right front impact sensors to the ACU is lost early in the
crash sequence.
Q6. How will owners of the affected vehicles be notified?
Kia will send a letter notifying owners of the affected vehicles by first class mail beginning on March 30, 2022.

Upon receipt of the letter, owners are to contact their authorized Kia dealer to arrange to have the recall performed
on their vehicle.

Kia Motors America, Inc. (KMA) receives lawsuit complaint alleging non-deployment of the frontal airbags in a 2014MY Soul.
October 29, 2020
Event Data Recorder (EDR) data downloaded from subject 2014MY Soul. Data confirms curtain airbags, side airbags and driver’s seatbelt pretensioner deployed. Front airbags did not deploy.
March-June 2021
Inspections of the subject 2014MY Soul conducted confirming the left and right front impact sensors were compromised and severed during impact-induced deformation likely resulting in loss of communication to the Airbag Control Unit from the front impact sensors early in the crash.
June 20-27, 2021
Based on the subject vehicle inspections results, Kia Corporation (Kia HQ) conducts two (2) vehicle crash tests in an attempt to duplicate frontal airbag non-deployment with similar incident crash conditions. Kia HQ unable to duplicate non-deployment. Front airbags deployed before both left and right front impact sensors were severed during crash sequence.
January 15, 2022
Kia HQ conducts additional vehicle crash test to duplicate nondeployment of frontal airbags with a more severe set of crash conditions than previously tested in June 2021. Non-deployment of the front airbags could not be duplicated. Front airbags deployed before both left and right front impact sensors were severed during crash sequence.
January 17-February 7, 2022
Kia HQ further conducts simulation testing, including review of frontal airbag deployment logic, to evaluate possible crash incident scenarios that could result in non-deployment of frontal airbags. Testing identifies very rare scenario that if communication to the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) from both the left and right front impact sensors is simultaneously lost extremely early in a crash, before frontal airbag deployment is commanded by the ACU, the front airbags will not deploy. Kia HQ also confirms no other similar incidents reported globally.
February 8-10, 2022
Kia HQ informs Kia North America Safety Office of test results and global field data. Kia NA Safety Office reviews field data and also confirms no similar non-deployment incidents other than the incident identified by the lawsuit.

Even though the simultaneous loss of communication from both left and right front impact sensors to the ACU before frontal airbag deployment is commanded by the ACU is a rare crash event, as a precautionary measure, Kia NA decides to conduct a safety recall for the 2014MY Soul. One (1) crash and (1) injury related to single lawsuit incident identified above. No fatalities or fires.

SC229 March 31, 2022 ATTENTION: ALL DEALER PRINCIPALS Kia America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Safety Recall Campaign on all 2014 MY Soul vehicles manufactured from July 21, 2013 through June 20, 2014. In the rare event that communication to the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) from both the left and right front impact sensors is simultaneously lost early in a severe crash, before frontal airbag deployment is commanded by the ACU, the front airbags will not deploy. Nondeployment of the frontal airbags increases the risk of injury. Dealers will be instructed to update the ACU software to an improved version that will enable deployment of the frontal airbags even if communication from both left and right front impact sensors to the ACU is lost early in the crash sequence. Your Service Manager was sent a copy of the owner notification letter and a Q&A guide for recall questions both of which describe the issue and information on how to access the list of affected vehicles. Kia will start mailing notices to the affected vehicle owners on March 30, 2022 What Should You Do?
