Summary
Kia Motors America (Kia
) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Forte, Forte Koup, and 2018-2019 Rio vehicles. The trunk latch may become damaged, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. Check if your Kia has a Recall
This bulletin provides the procedure for the replacement of the trunk latch assembly on the following vehicles:
- Certain 2016MY Forte (YD) vehicles (2/4-door) produced from March 2, 2016 through October 4, 2016,
- Certain 2016-2018MY Forte (YDm) vehicles (4-door) produced from May 11, 2016 through July 27, 2018, and
- Certain 2018-2019MY Rio (SC) vehicles produced from June 1, 2017 through July 5, 2019.
In high-temperature conditions, a thermal crack can develop in the pawl of the trunk latch which can intermittently cause the trunk’s interior emergency release to be inoperative. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of FMVSS 401, “Interior Trunk Release”. In the rare event that a person is inside the trunk compartment at the same time the latch pawl cracks, the person may not be able to get out of the trunk. The inability to get out of the trunk increases the risk of injury. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to replace the trunk lid latch assembly. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.
NOTICE
To assure complete customer satisfaction, always remember to refer to WebDCS Warranty Coverage (validation) Inquiry Screen (Service → Warranty Coverage → Warranty Coverage Inquiry) for a list of any additional campaigns that may need to be performed on the vehicle before returning it to the customer.

Emergency Trunk Latch Release Mechanism Chronology
Basis of Noncompliance Determination 573.6(c)(6)
July 29, 2021
Kia Corporation (Kia
HQ) notifies Kia
North America (Kia
NA) that Hyundai is considering conducting a field action to address an issue regarding the emergency trunk release mechanism in certain Hyundai models and advises Kia
NA that the same trunk latch assembly used in the Hyundai Sonata is also used in certain Kia
models. Kia
NA Safety Office begins evaluation of its field data for Kia
vehicles equipped with the same trunk latch assembly as the Hyundai vehicles.
August 1, 2021
Kia HQ informs Kia
NA that Hyundai Motor America (HMA) made a decision to recall certain Hyundai models on July 30, 2021 to address a damaged trunk pawl condition that could prevent the opening of trunk lid through actuation of the emergency trunk release.
August 2-3, 2021
Kia NA Safety Office identifies 41 warranty claims, three (3) technical assistance case center reports and two (2) customer pay claims which describe the potential inoperability of the emergency release mechanism.
Kia NA further evaluates potential noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and on August 3, 2021 concludes the an inoperable emergency trunk release mechanism results in the noncompliance with the trunk latch release requirements of FMVSS 401, § S.4.3(a).
August 3, 2021
Kia NA decides to conduct a noncompliance FMVSS 401 recall. 41 warranty claims, three (3) technical assistance case center reports and two (2) customer pay claims. No fatalities, injuries, crashes or fires.

FMVSS NONCOMPLIANCE RECALL CAMPAIGN TRUNK LATCH ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (SC216)
This bulletin provides the procedure for the replacement of the trunk latch assembly on the following vehicles:
• Certain 2016MY Forte (YD) vehicles (2/4-door) produced from March 2, 2016 through October 4, 2016,
• Certain 2016-2018MY Forte (YDm) vehicles (4-door) produced from May 11, 2016 through July 27, 2018, and
• Certain 2018-2019MY Rio (SC) vehicles produced from June 1, 2017 through July 5, 2019.

FOLLOW-UP NOTICE
February 10, 2022
THE REMEDY PART FOR YOUR VEHICLE IS NOW AVAILABLE
Dear Kia Rio Owner:
Kia has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to a noncompliance with a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS).
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kia America, Inc. has decided certain 2018-2019 MY 4-door Rio vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 401, “Interior Trunk Release”. The defect can result in the trunk’s interior emergency release to be inoperative. The inability to get out of the trunk increases the risk of injury. Our records indicate that you own or lease one of the potentially affected vehicles. This is a follow-up to the notice sent to you in October 2021. The remedy part is now available to be installed in your vehicle.
What Is the Problem?
In high-temperature conditions, a thermal crack can develop in the pawl of the trunk latch which can intermittently cause the trunk’s interior emergency release to be inoperative. If a person is inside the trunk compartment at the same time the latch pawl cracks, the person may not be able to get out of the trunk. The inability to get out of the trunk increases the risk of injury.
Kia Will Replace the Trunk Latch Assembly At No Cost for Parts Or Labor To You.
Kia will replace the trunk latch assembly with a new one. This work will be performed at Kia’s expense at no cost to you. The actual time required to perform this repair will be approximately 1 hour. However, your vehicle may be needed longer. Please contact your authorized Kia dealer for an estimate of how long they may need your vehicle for this repair.
What Should You Do In the Interim?
• No one should be allowed to occupy the trunk at any time. The trunk is a very dangerous location in the event of a crash.

INTERIM NOTICE
ATTENTION:
ALL DEALER PRINCIPALS
This is an INTERIM notice as Kia is currenting working on obtaining the remedy part. The purpose of this communication is to keep you informed of Kia’s recall implementation plan. We will send you another notice as soon as the remedy part becomes available.
Kia America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Noncompliance Recall Campaign on certain 2016-2018 MY 4-door & 2-door Forte vehicles manufactured from March 2, 2016 through July 27, 2018 and certain 2018-2019 MY 4-door Rio vehicles manufactured from June, 1 2017 through July 5, 2019.
In high-temperature conditions, a thermal crack can develop in the pawl of the trunk latch which can intermittently cause the trunk’s interior emergency release to be inoperative. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS 401, “Interior Trunk Release”. In the rare event that a person is inside the trunk compartment at the same time the latch pawl cracks, the person may not be able to get out of the trunk. The inability to get out of the trunk increases the risk of injury.
Your Service Manager was sent a copy of the interim owner notification letter and a Q&A guide for recall questions both of which describe the issue and information on how to access the list of affected vehicles. Kia will start mailing interim notices to the affected vehicle owners on October 5, 2021.
