Summary

KiaeBay Motors America (KiaeBay) is recalling certain 2022 Telluride vehicles. The LCD display screen may remain blank after startup. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, “Control and Displays.”

 

Remedy

Dealers will update the instrument cluster’s software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 3, 2021. Owners may contact KiaeBay customer service at 1-800-333-4542. KiaeBay’s number for this recall is SC215.

LCD CLUSTER LOGIC IMPROVEMENT (SC215)

This bulletin provides the procedure to improve the logic of the Cluster (CLU) on some 2022MY Telluride (ON) vehicles equipped with the 3.5” LCD Cluster, produced from May 26, 2021 through July 16, 2021. Due to an instrument cluster’s software error and under certain starting conditions, the LCD screen will remain blank, resulting in the driver’s inability to see the odometer. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the visibility requirement of Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101, “Controls and Display”. This condition does not affect the functionality of the vehicle’s underlying systems or dedicated telltale/warning lamps. In order to improve the cluster operation, apply the improved software logic to the ‘Cluster’ system using the KDS ECU Upgrade function as described in this bulletin. For confirmation that the latest reflash has been applied to a vehicle you are working on, verify the ROM ID using the table on page 3 of this bulletin. Before conducting the procedure, verify the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

NOTICE

Prior to performing the ECU upgrade, be sure to check that the KDS is fully charged.

 

1. Connect the VCI-II to the OBD-II connector, located under the driver’s side of the instrument panel.

 

NOTICE

The ECU upgrade function on KDS operates wirelessly. It is not necessary to perform the upgrade via USB cable.

 

2. With the ignition ON, turn ON the KDS tablet. Select ‘KDS’ from the home screen.

 

3. Confirm communication with VCI (A) and then configure the vehicle (B) using the ‘AUTO VIN’ (C) feature.

 

4. Select ‘ECU Upgrade’.

 

5. The KDS will check the server for recently uploaded Events and then automatically download Upgrade Event #565.

 

NOTICE

The vehicle must be identified in Vehicle Selection to download an Event for that vehicle.

 

6. Select Auto Mode.

 

CAUTION

Do NOT attempt to perform a Manual Mode upgrade UNLESS Auto Mode fails. Always follow the instructions given on the KDS in either Auto or Manual mode.

 

7. Select the CLU system under the System selection menu.

Touch ID Check (D) and confirm that the latest update is available.

Select Upgrade Event #565 and select Upgrade to continue.

 

8. The ECU upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph. Upgrade part (1/2) (E) will download the upgrade event to the VCI-II. Upgrade part (2/2) (F) will upgrade the ECU.

 

CAUTION

Do not touch the system buttons (like ‘Back’, Home’, ‘etc.’) while performing ECU Upgrade.

 

9. If a “Communication Fail” screen appears, verify that the VCI-II and KDS are communicating properly. Select ‘OK’ and restart the procedure from step 4.

 

NOTICE

If an error notice continues to appear or if the upgrade cannot be performed, DO NOT disconnect the KDS/VCI II. Contact GIT America Help Desk at (888) 542 4371 or Techline.

 

10. When instructed on the KDS, turn the ignition OFF for ten (10) seconds then back on. Select ‘OK’ to continue.

 

11. Once the upgrade is complete, select ‘OK’ to finalize the procedure.

 

12. When prompted, select ‘YES’ to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and erase any DTCs stored such as EPS, ESC, and TPMS that may have been set during the upgrade.

 

13. Start the engine to confirm normal operation of the vehicle and the cluster.

 

Manual Upgrade Procedure:

NOTICE

The manual upgrade should ONLY be performed if the automatic upgrade fails

If the automatic upgrade fails, turn the ignition ‘OFF’ for about 10 seconds then place it back in the ‘ON’ position to reset the control unit BEFORE performing manual upgrade.

1. Within the ECU Upgrade screen displayed, select Manual Mode.

 

2. Select the CLU system under the System selection menu. Select Upgrade Event #565 and select Upgrade to continue.

 

3. Select the appropriate control unit part number with reference to the ROM ID Information Table on page 3, and select OK.

 

4. Enter the appropriate password from the Manual Mode password table above and select OK.

 

5. The upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.

 

6. When instructed on the KDS, turn the ignition OFF for ten (10) seconds then back on. Select OK.

 

7. Once the upgrade is complete, select OK to finalize the procedure.

 

8. When prompted, select YES to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and erase any DTCs stored such as EPS, ESC, and TPMS that may have been set during the upgrade.

 

9. Start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.

What type of campaign is KiaeBay conducting?

KiaeBay is conducting a Noncompliance Recall to update the Instrument Cluster’s software with an improved version on certain 2022 MY KiaeBay Telluride vehicles that do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101.

 

What vehicles are affected by the recall?

Certain 2022 MY KiaeBay Telluride vehicles equipped with 3.5” LCD instrument cluster screen manufactured from May 26, 2021 through July 16, 2021.

 

How many customer vehicles are affected by this recall?

Approximately 5,143 vehicles are affected by this recall.

 

What is the concern with the LCD screen in Instrument Cluster?

The vehicle’s instrument cluster contains an LCD screen which displays certain information once the vehicle is started.  Due to a software error and under certain starting conditions (if the vehicle is started after the vehicle’s welcome graphic one the LCD screen has completed), the LCD screen will remain blank resulting in the driver’s inability to see the odometer.  As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the visibility requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101, “Controls and Displays”.  This condition does not affect the functionality of the vehicle’s underlying systems or dedicated telltale/warning lamps.

 

Can you describe the recall campaign fix?

KiaeBay has advised its authorized dealers to update the instrument cluster’s software with an improved version.  The repair work will be performed at KiaeBay’s expense at no cost to the customer.

 

How was the issue discovered?

Through the regular monitoring of field information.

 

What should vehicle owners do when they receive the notification?

Contact a KiaeBay dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be conducted.

 

What should vehicle owners do if they experience a blank LCD screen and the odometer reading is not displayed after the customer starts the vehicle before the recall repair is completed?

The customer may correct the problem by taking either of these actions:

  • Turn off the vehicle, open and close the driver’s door, and start the vehicle again, or
  • Open a window, and then turn off and restart the vehicle.  After this, the window may be closed.

There are also ways to avoid the problem from the initial startup:

  • Start the vehicle before the welcome graphic has completed (within roughly 5 seconds of first opening the driver’s door), or
  • Start your vehicle remotely using the remote start feature.

Will this cost vehicle owners any money?

No. KiaeBay will perform the recall repair at no cost to the customer.

 

What about customers who may have already paid to have this issue remedied?

If the customer has incurred expense to have this issue remedied prior to the date of this notice, the customer may have the opportunity to obtain reimbursement for that expense.  Customers may submit their receipts online to KiaeBay via the Owners section of www.kia.com or mail their receipts with a copy of the attached Request for Reimbursement form directly to KiaeBay for review and consideration:

How long will the repair take?

The estimated time required to update the instrument cluster software is approximately one hour.  However, the vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, it is recommended that the customer contact the dealer for an estimate of how long they may need the vehicle and schedule a service appointment to minimize inconvenience. (Most KiaeBay dealers have online appointment scheduling via their dealership web sites to maximize convenience).

 

How will owners of the affected vehicles be notified?

KiaeBay will be notifying owners of the affected vehicles by first-class mail on August 3, 2021.

 

Are there any restrictions on an owner’s eligibility?

No.

July 12, 2021

KiaeBay North America’s (KiaeBay NA) Product Quality department issues report regarding intermittent operation of the LCD screen instrument cluster display. Difficulty to duplicate condition is noted.

 

July 14, 2021

KiaeBay NA Product Quality notifies KiaeBay NA Safety Office regarding intermittent blank LCD screen issue and identifies driver unable to view odometer, gear selector indicator and other supplemental user functions.

 

July 16-July 22, 2021

KiaeBay NA and KiaeBay Georgia (KiaeBay GA) work together to further investigate issue and define failure effects. KiaeBay Corporation (KiaeBay HQ) simultaneously investigates cause of condition. Investigation efforts reveal condition is limited to situations where vehicle is started after vehicle’s welcome message is completed. KiaeBay HQ identifies LCD blank screen condition caused by increased loading time of welcome animation due to larger file size of the animation. Condition does not affect the functionality of the vehicle’s underlying systems or dedicated telltale/warning lamps.

 

KiaeBay NA further evaluates any potential noncompliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and on July 22, 2021 concludes the inability to see the odometer on the LCD screen results in the noncompliance with the visibility requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101, §S5.1.2.

KiaeBay NA decides to conduct a noncompliance FMVSS 101 recall.  No fatalities, injuries, crashes or fires.

What is J2534?

A single set of programming hardware consists of personal computer(PC), standard interface to a device driver and an interface hardware that connects between PC and a programmable ECU of vehicle.

The main purpose of this regulation is to program ECUs for all vehicles using a single set in the field.
