JFA MFC/FCA OPERATION LOGIC IMPROVEMENT (SC179) | ||
This bulletin provides the procedure to improve the logic of the Multi-Function Camera (MFC) / Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) software on some 2019MY Optima (JFa) vehicles, produced from May 21, 2018 through May 29, 2019, which may cause the braking assist function to not work properly when the MFC/FCA system senses a potential frontal collision with a stationary vehicle. To correct this concern, install the improved logic to the MFC/FCA using the KDS ECU Upgrade function as described in this bulletin. For confirmation that the latest reflash has been installed to the vehicle you are working on, verify the ROM ID using the table on page 2 of this bulletin. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
(NHTSA Recall Number: 19V539)
This notice applies to your vehicle: (Insert VIN)
August 27, 2019
Dear Kia
Optima Owner:
Kia has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kia
Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 MY Kia
Optima vehicles. The defect may cause the braking assist function to not work properly when the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (“FCA”) System senses a potential frontal collision with a stationary vehicle. The inability of the braking assist function to work properly may not reduce the risk of impact in a potential frontal collision, increasing the risk of injury.
What Is The Problem?
The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (“FCA”) is a supplemental system designed to detect and monitor the vehicle ahead in the roadway through radar signals and camera recognition to warn the driver that a collision is imminent, and if necessary, apply emergency braking. However, due to an error in the FCA’s software, the braking assist function may not engage when a stationary vehicle is detected, increasing the risk of a crash.
Kia
will update the FCA software at no cost to you.
Kia
has advised its authorized dealers to update the FCA software so that the braking assist functions properly when a potential frontal collision on a stationary vehicle is sensed. The work will be done at no cost to you.
What Should You Do?
- In the interest of the safety of your passengers, as well as your own safety, please immediately contact your Kia
dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be conducted. The estimated time required to inspect and perform necessary repairs will be approximately one (1) hour.
