Summary

KiaeBay logo Motors America (KiaeBay logo) is recalling certain 2019 Sedona vehicles equipped with an 8-passenger seat arrangement. The seat belt buckle for the second-row middle seat may have been improperly installed on the wrong side of the seat, preventing the proper use of the 3-point seat belt. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

 

Remedy

KiaeBay logo has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt installation, and reinstall the seat belt buckle to the correct side if necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 8, 2019. Owners may contact KiaeBay logo customer service at 1-800-333-4542. KiaeBay logo ‘s number for this recall is SC177.

SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN
SUBJECT: 2ND ROW CENTER SEAT BELT BUCKLE (SC177)

 

This bulletin provides the procedure to inspect and, if necessary, reinstall the second row middle seat belt buckles on certain 2019MY Sedona (YP) vehicles equipped with an 8passenger seat configuration manufactured from October 31, 2018 through November 28, 2018.  The recalled vehicles may not comply with the FMVSS No. 208 (Occupant Crash Protection) requirements that each rear designated seating position contain a functioning Type 2 (or 3-point) seat belt assembly.  The seat belt buckles for the second-row middle seat may have been installed on the wrong side of the seat, preventing proper use of the 3-point seat belt.  An incorrectly used seat belt can increase the risk of injury in a crash.  Before conducting the procedure, verify the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

 

NOTICE 

There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

 

NOTICE 

To assure complete customer satisfaction, always remember to refer to WebDCS Warranty Coverage (validation) Inquiry Screen (Service → Warranty Coverage → Warranty Coverage Inquiry) for a list of any additional campaigns that may need to be performed on the vehicle before returning it to the customer.

 

Inspection Procedure:

  1. While sitting in the 2nd row center seat, locate the center seat belt buckle (A).
  • If the 2nd row center seat belt buckle is located on the right side of the center seat (þ), no further action is required.
  • If the 2nd row center seat belt buckle is located on the left of the center seat (ý), proceed to the Center Seat Belt Buckle Reinstallation Procedure ý

 

Center Seat Belt Buckle Reinstallation Procedure:

  1. Place the left and right 2nd row seats in the stand-up position.
  2. Unclip the rear cover (B) to expose the side cover retaining screws.
  1. Carefully and partially remove the two (2) side covers (D).
  2. Remove the center seat belt buckle retaining bolt (E) and, on the opposite side, the center seat belt anchor connector retaining bolt (F).
  3. Apply a small amount of Permatex®

High Strength 27100 (Red), LOCTITE® 263, or equivalent high strength threadlocker onto the center seat belt buckle retaining bolt threads and the center seat belt anchor connector retaining bolt threads.

 

NOTICE  

Be careful not to drip any threadlocker onto the vehicle interior/exterior when applying. Use of a shop towel is recommended, as shown.

  1. Reinstall the center seat belt buckle (A) and center seat belt anchor connector (G) at the opposite side of where they were previously installed. Torque the two (2) bolts to specifications.

 

NOTICE

The center seat belt anchor   connector should now be on the left side and the center seat belt buckle should now be on the right side.

 

Tightening torque:

32.55 – 39.77 lb.ft (44.13 – 53.93 N.m, 4.5 – 5.5 kgf.m)

  1. Reinstall all removed components in the reverse order of removal. Ensure the following are installed properly:
    • Rear cover (B): ensure the cover is properly attached to the bottom cover (H).
    • Left strap (I): ensure the strap is routed properly, between the bar (J) and inner side cover and then through the side cover opening, as shown.
    • Right strap (K): ensure the strap is routed properly, between the cushion and bar (L) and then through the side cover opening, as shown.
  2. Verify proper operation of the straps and folding functions of the center seat.

KiaeBay logo has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety

This letter is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. KiaeBay logo Motors has decided that certain 2019 MY Sedona vehicles equipped with an 8-passenger seat configuration may not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 208, “Occupant crash protection.”  The non-compliance may prevent the proper use of the seat belt for the second-row middle seat. In the event of a crash, an incorrectly used seat belt increases the risk of injury.

 

What Is The Problem?

The seat belt buckles for the second-row middle seat may have been installed on the wrong side of the seat, thereby preventing proper use of the 3-point seat belt. In the event of a crash, an incorrectly used seat belt increases the risk of injury.

KiaeBay logo will inspect seat belt buckles for the second-row middle seat and, if installed on the wrong side, will reinstall them to the correct side at no cost to you. 

KiaeBay logo has advised its authorized dealers to inspect the seat belt buckles for the second-row middle seat. If the buckles were incorrectly installed to the wrong side of the seat, KiaeBay logo dealers will reinstall them to the correct side of the second-row middle seat. The work will be performed at KiaeBay logo’s expense at no cost to you.

 

What Should You Do? 

  • In the interest of the safety of your passengers, as well as your own safety, please immediately contact your KiaeBay logo dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be conducted. The estimated time required to inspect and perform necessary repairs will be approximately one (1) hour.  However, your vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize any inconvenience.
  • If you notice that the seat belt buckles for the middle seat are not installed on the correct side of the seat in order to be properly used, do not use that seating position until you have this recall repair performed.
