High Pressure Fuel Pump
Basis of Safety Defect Determination 573.6(c)(6)
May 15, 2023
During routine review of field data, Kia
North America (Kia
NA) Safety Office identifies increased replacement claims for the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) in the 2018-2021 Stinger which describe a reduction/loss of motive power. Kia
NA Safety Office begins monitoring issue.
June 2, 2023
Kia
NA Safety Office escalates issue to the SEL for further investigation and initiates HPFP part collection.
June 23, 2023—July 5, 2023
Kia
NA Safety Office collects two (2) HPFPs with reported reduction of motive power for further evaluation.
Kia
NA Safety Office and the North America Quality Center install collected parts into exemplar Stinger at Kia
America, Inc. Vehicle hesitation followed by ability to accelerate with 2,000 RPM engine speed limitation noted. Loss of motive power while driving at highway speed could not be duplicated.
July 11, 2023—August 1, 2023
Kia
NA Safety Office shares test results with Kia
Corporation (Kia
HQ) for further evaluation. Kia
HQ evaluates warranty-return high pressure fuel pump parts and conducts preliminary evaluation of issue with the fuel control valve in the intermittently stuck and fully stuck condition.
August 7, 2023—September 1, 2023
Kia
HQ conducts testing in attempt to duplicate any loss of motive power concern while driving. Kia
HQ confirms loss of motive power while driving at highway speeds is possible under excessively rich combustion condition due to engine management logic when over-pressurization of the HPFP exists.
September 5, 2023
Kia
HQ meets with Kia
NA Safety Office and shares investigation results. Kia
NA Safety Office updates data analysis to include all Kia
data sources and identifies 80 unique VINS with a report of loss of motive power while driving at highway speed. Two (2) customer complaints (dates of receipt 7/22/2022—3/28/2023), six (6) technical assistance cases (dates of receipt 8/25/2020—7/21/2022) and 77 warranty claims (dates of receipt 3/20/2020—9/4/2023). There are no crashes, injuries or fatalities.
