Production Dates : AUG 25, 2016 – NOV 22, 2017 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-594 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : A crack can develop in the pawl of the trunk latch base subassembly which can intermittently cause the trunk’s interior emergency release lever to be inoperative. As a result, the subject vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 401, §S4.3(a). In the rare event that a person is inside the trunk compartment at the same time the latch pawl cracks, the person may not be able exit the trunk, thereby increasing the risk of injury. FMVSS 1 : 401 – Internal trunk release FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : The inability to exit the trunk increases the risk of injury. Description of the Cause : Crack in the trunk latch base subassembly pawl. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Intermittent failure of the trunk to open or close. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer to have the trunk latch base subassembly replaced with a new one. Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 10, 2022. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component has a trunk latch base subassembly with a strengthened pawl. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The trunk latch with a strengthened pawl was applied to vehicle production on 11/29/2017 for the Optima vehicles (Hwasung plant), on 3/7/2018 for the Optima vehicles (Georgia plant), 11/22/2017 for the Optima Hybrid vehicles (Hwasung plant), and on 11/23/2017 for Optima Plug-in Hybrid vehicles (Hwasung plant). The 2018MY Rio vehicle is not equipped with the recall component. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : The dealer notice is scheduled to begin and end on 10/16/2023 and the owner notice is scheduled to begin on 10/19/2023 and end on 10/20/2023.
