CURTAIN AIRBAG INSPECTION/REINSTALLATION (SC257)
This bulletin provides information to inspect both LH and RH curtain airbags and, if necessary, to reinstall the curtain airbags(s) on certain 2023MY Sportage (NQ5a) vehicles produced at Kia
Georgia from January 12, 2022 (SOP) through November 17, 2022. The subject vehicles are equipped with curtain airbags that may have been assembled with a twisted condition during vehicle assembly. As a result, the curtain airbag(s) may not deploy properly in a crash sufficient to warrant such a deployment. An improper deployment of the curtain airbag(s) increases the risk of injury in a crash. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to inspect both RH and LH curtain airbags in the affected vehicles for a twisted/folded condition and, if necessary, reinstall properly. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

Open the driver (LH) and partially detach the door weatherstrip (A) as shown. Note: Inspection area shown by the red line. Carefully, pull down on the headliner (B) trim as shown (about 1.0 – 1.5 inches) to view/access the curtain airbag (C). 3. Inspect the curtain airbag (D) along the inspection area (use a flashlight if needed) and confirm one of the following conditions: Do Not attempt to remove the โAโ pillar trim (C) for this inspection. โข The curtain airbag (D) does not appear to be installed twisted and the black stitching is not visible (OK), repeat steps 1-3 for passenger (RH) side, then skip to step 5. โข The curtain airbag (D) does appear to be installed twisted and the black stitching is visible (NG). Take a photo using KDS and open a Techline Case. Repeat Steps 1-3 for passenger (RH) side, then proceed to step 4. 4. 5. assembly plant in the U.S. from January 12, 2022 to November 17, 2022. The side curtain airbag(s) may have been assembled with a twisted condition during vehicle production. As a result, the side curtain airbag(s) may not deploy properly in a crash sufficient to warrant such a deployment. An improper deployment of the side curtain airbag(s) increases the risk of injury in a crash. Dealers will inspect the assembled condition of the side curtain airbags and, if necessary, reinstall the side curtain airbag(s) correctly.
