HECU FUSE/MULTI-FUSE REPLACEMENT (SC227A/B)
This bulletin provides information to replace the ESC1 (40A to 20A), ESC2 (40A to 25A) fuses of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) and install an updated label to the junction box on certain 2016-2018MY K900 (KH) model vehicles, produced from April 21, 2015 through November 6, 2017, and to replace the junction box multi-fuse of the HECU on 2014-2016MY Sportage (SL) model vehicles produced from September 30, 2013 through November 16, 2015. An engine compartment fire may occur in the area where the HECU is located. The HECU may experience an internal electrical short circuit that could result in overcurrent, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is driven or while parked. Dealers are to install the new fuses/multi-fuse with different capacity to prevent an overcurrent condition in the HECU’s electrical circuit board. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to install the two (2) lower amperage fuses and junction box cover labels on K900 (KH) vehicles (SC227A) or the multi-fuse and junction box cover on Sportage (SL) vehicles (SC227B). Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

SC227 September 20, 2022 ATTENTION: ALL DEALER PARTS & SERVICE MANAGERS THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP NOTICE TO ADVISE THAT THE REMEDY PART IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR SPORTAGE VEHICLES. Kia America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Safety Recall Campaign on certain 2016-2018 MY K900 vehicles manufactured from April 21, 2015 through November 6, 2017 and all 2014-2016 MY Sportage vehicles manufactured from September 30, 2013 through November 16, 2015. An engine compartment fire may occur in the area where the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) is located. The exact cause of fire remains unknown. However, it is believed that the HECU may experience an internal electrical short circuit that could result in overcurrent. An electrical short circuit in the HECU increases the risk of an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. A fire increases the risk of injury. Dealers will install a new fuse with a different capacity to prevent an overcurrent condition in the HECU’s electrical circuit board. Kia recommends that vehicle owners park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repair has been performed. The Technical Service Bulletin that provides the repair procedures, affected VIN production range, and warranty claim information will be posted on the Kia Global Information System (KGIS) at www.kiatechinfo.com. Enclosed you will find a copy of the follow-up owner notification letter and a Q&A Guide for recall questions, both of which describe the issue. Note that any vehicle owner who has already paid for related repairs can submit a request for reimbursement online via the Owner’s Section of www.kia.com. Kia mailed follow-up notices to affected K900 vehicles on April 26, 2022. Kia will mail follow-up notices to the affected Sportage vehicle owners on September 22, 2022. Also, please make certain the appropriate personnel in your dealership are familiar with the details of this recall to ensure proper responses to customer inquiries and requests to have the recall performed on their vehicles. This Safety Recall Campaign represents an opportunity for your service department to deliver an exceptional service experience (e.g., flexible service appointment process, car wash and vacuum and timely service).
