NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V447

Manufacturer Kia Motors America

Components STEERING, LANE DEPARTURE

Potential Number of Units Affected 846

Summary

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2021-2022 K5 vehicles equipped with 2.5L T-GDI engines. The Rack-Mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (R-MDPS) system lacks the ability to diagnose communication faults. If a communication fault occurs while driving around a curve with Lane Following Assist (LFA) engaged, the steering assist level may not adjust properly, causing a sudden increase in the steering effort required.

Remedy

Dealers will update the R-MDPS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are were mailed June 24, 2021. Owner may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC213.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

SUBJECT:

MDPS OPERATION LOGIC IMPROVEMENT (SC213)

This bulletin provides the procedure to update the software logic of the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) on some 2021-2022MY K5 (DL3a) vehicles equipped with the 2.5L T-GDI engine, produced from November 16, 2020 through May 12, 2021. The operation logic for the MDPS system lacks a communication fault diagnosis feature.  If such communication fault occurs while the vehicle is driven around a curve with Lane Following Assist (LFA) engaged, the MDPS may retain the vehicle’s pre-fault steering assist level, even after the vehicle exits the curve.  If this occurs, increased steering effort can result, increasing the risk of a crash. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to apply the improved logic to the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system using the KDS ECU Upgrade function as described in this bulletin. For confirmation that the latest reflash has been applied to a vehicle you are working on, verify the ROM ID using the table on page 2 of this bulletin. Before conducting the procedure, verify the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

NOTICE

There is no charge to the vehicle owner for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

ECU Upgrade Procedure:

To correct this condition, the ECU should be reprogrammed using the KDS  download, as described in this bulletin.

Upgrade Event Name
562. DL3a MDPS OPERATION LOGIC IMPROVEMENT

NOTICE

  • Confirm a fully charged battery (12.3 volts or higher is necessary) is used or utilize a fully charged jump starter box connected to the battery.
  • Ensure the KDS GDS is sufficiently charged at 60% or higher prior to reflash.
  • All ECU upgrades must be performed with the ignition set to the ‘ON’ position unless otherwise stated.
  • Damaged VCI II units should not be used and promptly replaced.
  • Be careful not to disconnect the VCI-II connected to the vehicle during the ECU upgrade procedure.
  • DO NOT start the engine during ECU upgrade.
  • DO NOT turn the ignition key ‘OFF’ or interrupt the power supply during ECU upgrade.
  • When the ECU upgrade is completed, turn the ignition ‘OFF’ and wait 10 seconds before starting the engine.
  • ONLY use approved ECU upgrade software designated for the correct application.

IMPORTANT

It is recommended to ALWAYS check the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to locate the ECU Part  Number respective to Auto/Manual Mode ROM IDs. DO NOT reference the parts label  affixed to the ECU.

NOTICE

Before attempting an ECU upgrade on any Kia model, make sure to first determine whether the applicable model is equipped with an immobilizer security system. Failure to follow proper  procedures may cause the PCM to become inoperative after the upgrade and any claims associated  with this repair may be subject to chargeback.

SC213 – 2021-2022 MY K5 RACK-MOUNTED MOTOR DRIVEN POWER STEERING (R-MDPS) CONTROL LOGIC

SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

Q & A

June 16, 2021

What type of campaign is Kia conducting?

Kia America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Safety Recall Campaign to update the MDPS software logic on certain 2021-2022 MY Kia K5 vehicles.

What vehicles are affected by the recall?

Certain 2021-2022 MY Kia K5 vehicles equipped with 2.5L Turbo-GDI engines manufactured from November 16, 2020 through May 12, 2021.

How many customer vehicles are affected by this recall?

Approximately 846 K5 vehicles are affected by this recall.

What is the concern with the Rack-Mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (R-MDPS) control logic?

The control logic for the Rack-Mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (R-MDPS) system lacks a communication fault diagnosis feature.

Can you describe the recall campaign and fix?

Dealers will update the MDPS software logic to a version that recognizes communication faults.

How will owners of the affected vehicles be notified?

Kia will notify owners of the affected vehicles by first class mail beginning on June 24, 2021.

What should vehicle owners do when they receive the notification?

Upon receipt of the notification letter, owners are to contact their authorized Kia dealer to arrange to have the software update performed.  Owners are instructed to not activate the LFA function until the software update has been completed.

How was the issue discovered?

During a review of various vehicle control system logics by the R&D Center for purposes of new vehicle development.

Will this cost vehicle owners any money?

No. Kia will perform the recall repair at no cost to the customer.

What about customers who may have already paid to have this situation corrected?

If the customer has incurred expense to remedy this issue prior to the date of this notice, the customer may have the opportunity to obtain reimbursement for that expense.  Customers may submit their receipts online to Kia via the Owners section (Contact Kia) of www.kia.com OR mail their documentation with the completed Request for Reimbursement Form included with this letter directly to Kia for review and consideration at the following address:

Consumer Assistance Center
Kia America, Inc.
P.O. Box 52410
Irvine, CA  92619-2410
1-800-333-4542

How long will the update take?

The actual time required to perform the update will be approximately 1 to 2 hours.  However, the vehicle may be needed longer.  It is recommended that owners schedule a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.  Owners can also contact their authorized Kia dealer for an exact estimate of how long they may need the vehicle.  (Most Kia dealers have online appointment scheduling via their dealership websites to maximize convenience.)

Are there any restrictions on an owner’s eligibility?

No.

If a customer has an immediate question, where can they get further information?

The customer can contact their local authorized Kia dealership or call Kia’s Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800333-4KIA (4542), Monday through Friday, 5 AM to 6 PM Pacific Standard Time, or via the internet at www.kia.com (Owner’s Section).
