Summary

KiaeBay logo Motors America (KiaeBay logo) is recalling certain 2017-2021 Sportage and Cadenza vehicles. The electrical circuit in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short-circuit, which can cause a fire in the engine compartment.

 

Remedy

KiaeBay logo will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box. Vehicles equipped with an electronic parking brake (EPB) will also receive a HECU software update. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began on April 30, 2021. Owners may contact KiaeBay logo customer service at 1-800-333-4542. KiaeBay logo’s number for this recall is SC206.

This bulletin provides the procedure to install a new fuse kit for the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) in the junction box on some Sportage (QL) and Cadenza (YG) vehicles listed in the table below. Also, affected Sportage (QL) vehicles equipped with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) / without Smart Cruise Control (SCC) will also get the HECU software logic update. The affected vehicles may exhibit numerous warnings, including illumination of the tire pressure warning light, ABS warning light, MIL warning light, a burning/melting smell and/or smoke from engine compartment in the area where the HECU is located. It is believed that the electrical circuit within the HECU experiences a short circuit condition that results in excessive current, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

KiaeBay logo Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2017-2021 MY Sportage vehicles not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC).  The defect can result in a fire in your vehicle’s engine compartment.  Our records indicate that you own or lease one of the potentially affected vehicles.

 

What Is The Problem? 

The electrical circuit in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short-circuit, possibly causing an engine compartment fire in the area where the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) is located, thereby increasing the risk of injury.  Illumination of various warning lights on the instrument panel may occur including the Tire Pressure

warning light, ABS warning light, and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).  In addition, a burning/melting odor and/or smoke from the engine compartment can occur.

 

KiaeBay logo Will Replace Certain Fuses In The Electrical Junction Box To Prevent An Over-Current Condition In The HECU’s Electrical Circuit.

 

KiaeBay logo has advised its authorized dealers to replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box to prevent an overcurrent condition in the HECU’s electrical circuit.   In addition, for Sportage vehicles equipped with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), dealers will also update the HECU software with a newer version.  The actual time required to perform the repair will be approximately 1 to 2 hours.  However, your vehicle may be needed longer.  We recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize inconvenience.  Please contact your dealer for an exact estimate of how long they may need your vehicle for this repair.

  • In the interest of the safety of your passengers, as well as your own safety, please immediately contact your KiaeBay logo dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be conducted.

SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN Q & A March 22, 2021

 

Q1. What type of campaign is KiaeBay logo conducting?

KiaeBay logo Motors America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Safety Recall Campaign to replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box to prevent an over-current condition in the HECU’s electrical circuit.

 

Q2. What vehicles are affected by the recall?

All 2017-2021 MY Sportage vehicles manufactured from December 10, 2015 through October 23, 2020 not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC).

All 2017-2019 MY Cadenza vehicles manufactured from June 2, 2016 through June 14, 2019 not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC).

 

Q3. How many customer vehicles are affected by this recall?

Approximately 372,251 Sportage vehicles and 7,680 Cadenza vehicles are affected by this recall.

 

Q4. What is the concern with the HECU?

An engine compartment fire may occur in the area where the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) is located.  The electrical circuit within the HECU may experience a short circuit condition that results in excessive current, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire.  The exact cause of electrical short circuit condition within the HECU is unknown.

 

Q5. Can you describe the recall campaign fix?

For all 2017-2021 MY Sportage vehicles manufactured from December 10, 2015 through October 23, 2020 not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC), dealers are to install two 30A fuses instead of 40As if not equipped with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) or two 25A fuses instead of 40As if equipped with EPB.  In addition, for EPB equipped Sportage vehicles, dealers are also to update the HECU software with a newer version.

For all 2017-2019 MY Cadenza vehicles manufactured from June 2, 2016 through June 14, 2019 not equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC), dealers are to install a new fuse kit which contains a 25A fuse instead of 40A.

 

Q6. How was the issue discovered?

Through the regular monitoring of field information.

 

Q7. What should vehicle owners do when they receive the notification?

In the interest of the safety of their passengers, as well as their own safety, customers should immediately contact their KiaeBay logo dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be performed.  Also, although KiaeBay logo is unaware of any fire incidents occurring while the vehicle is turned off and parked, out of an abundance of caution, customers are advised to park their vehicle outdoors and away from any other vehicles or structures until they have the recall repair performed.

 

Q8. Will this cost vehicle owners any money?

No. KiaeBay logo will perform the recall repair at no cost to the customer.

 

Q9. What about customers who may have already paid to have this issue remedied?

If the customer has incurred expense to have this issue remedied prior to the date of this notice, the customer may have the opportunity to obtain reimbursement for that expense.  Customers may submit their receipts online to KiaeBay logo via the Owners section of www.kia.comor mail their receipts with a cover letter directly to KiaeBay logo for review and consideration:

Q10. How long will the repair take?

The estimated time required to replace the fuses with new ones is approximately one (1) to two (2) hours.  However, the vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, it is recommended that the customer contact the dealer for an estimate of how long they may need the vehicle and schedule a service appointment to minimize inconvenience. (Most KiaeBay logo dealers have online appointment scheduling via their dealership web sites to maximize convenience).

 

Q11. How will owners of the affected vehicles be notified?

KiaeBay logo will be notifying owners of the affected vehicles by first-class mail beginning on April 23, 2021.

 

Q12. Are there any restrictions on an owner’s eligibility?

No.

KiaeBay logo Motors Corporation (KMC) makes decision to conduct a recall  of certain Sportage and Cadenza models sold in the Korean market due to the possibility that the electrical circuit in the HECU may short resulting in excessive current and possible engine compartment fire.

 

March 1, 2021

KMC advises KiaeBay logo Motors North America (KMNA) of its recall in Korean market.

 

March 3, 2021

As a precautionary measure, KMNA decides to recall 2017-2021MY Sportage and 2017-2019MY Cadenza vehicles equipped with the same HECU as those recalled in the Korean market. No known reported fires, crashes or injuries related to this condition.
