Check if your Kia has a Recall
This bulletin provides information related to a software update to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to install the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) in order to protect the engine from excessive connecting rod bearing damage (refer to applicable model table below).
The KSDS detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear. It is designed to alert the driver at an early stage of bearing wear before the occurrence of severe engine damage, including engine failure. If vibrations caused by bearing wear start to occur, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will blink continuously, and the vehicle will be placed in Limp Home Mode. This will reduce further damage to the engine and ensure that the vehicle occupants are not exposed to the risk of a more severe engine failure. At that time, Diagnostic Trouble Code (“DTC”) P1326, specific to the KSDS, will be recorded in the ECU. The vehicle can continue to be operated for a limited time in Limp Home Mode, but it will accelerate slowly and have a reduced maximum speed. Also, engine RPMs will be limited to approximately 1800-2000 RPM. Kia is requesting the completion of this bulletin on all affected vehicles. Before conducting the procedure, verify the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs. Also, please have your KDS connected to the internet regularly to get the latest software updates available.

- Ensure the KDS GDS is sufficiently charged at 60% or higher prior to reflash.
- All ECU upgrades must be done with the ignition key in the ‘ON’ position unless otherwise stated.
- Be careful not to disconnect the VCI-II connected to the vehicle during the ECU upgrade procedure.
- DO NOT start the engine during ECU upgrade.
- DO NOT turn the ignition key ‘OFF’ or interrupt the power supply during ECU upgrade.
- When the ECU upgrade is completed, turn the ignition ‘OFF’ and wait 10 seconds before starting the engine.
- ONLY use approved ECU upgrade software designated for the correct model and model year.
IMPORTANT
It is recommended to ALWAYS check the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to locate the ECU Part Number respective to Auto/Manual Mode ROM IDs. DO NOT reference the parts label affixed to the ECU.
NOTICE
Before attempting an ECU upgrade on any Kia model, make sure to first determine whether the applicable model is equipped with an immobilizer security system.
Failure to follow proper procedures may cause the PCM to become inoperative after the upgrade and any claims associated with this repair may be subject to chargeback.

Q4. How many customer vehicles are affected by this recall?
Approximately 294,756 vehicles are affected by this recall.
Q5. Can you describe the recall campaign fix?
Dealers will be instructed to inspect the engine compartment for fuel and/or engine oil leaks, perform an engine test and make any repairs, including engine replacement, if necessary. In addition, dealers will also perform a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update to the engine control unit (ECU) in the affected vehicles to prevent engine damage due to potential excessive connecting rod bearing wear. .) Upon completion of the KSDS software update, Kia will warrant any engine long block assembly repairs needed due to connecting rod bearing damage for 15 years/150,000 miles starting from the first date of service, whichever occurs first, for both new and used vehicle owners. Kia
will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia
’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 11, 2020.
NOTE: Timing of KSDS software availability will vary, depending on the models. If the software is available, the update will be performed at the time of engine inspection/test/repair. If the software is not yet available, there will be a follow-up notification to the affected customers when the software for their respective model becomes available
Q6. How was the issue discovered?
The occurrence of some engine compartment fires was discovered through the regular monitoring of field information. An engine compartment fire can occur for many different reasons. To date a cause of such fires due to a manufacturing or design issue/defect has not been identified. However, Kia is conducting this recall to mitigate any unreasonable fire risk due to potential fuel leaking, oil leaking and/or engine damage.
Q7. What should vehicle owners do when they receive the notification?
In the interest of the safety of their passengers, as well as their own safety, customers should immediately contact their Kia dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be performed.
Q8. Will this cost vehicle owners any money?
No. Kia will perform the recall repair at no cost to the customer. Q9.What about customers who may have already paid to have this issue remedied?A9.
If the customer has incurred expense to have this issue remedied prior to the date of this notice, the customer may have the opportunity to obtain reimbursement for that expense. Customers may submit their receipts online to Kia via the Owners section of www.kia.com or mail their receipts with a cover letter directly to Kia
for review and consideration:

The estimated time required to complete the inspection/test/repair will be 2 to 4 hours. However, the vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, it is recommended that the customer contact the dealer for an estimate of how long they may need the vehicle and schedule a service appointment to minimize inconvenience. Most Kia dealers have online appointment scheduling via their dealership web sites to maximize convenience.
Q11. How will owners of the affected vehicles be notified?
Kia will be notifying owners of the affected vehicles by first-class mail beginning on January 25, 2021.
Q12. Are there any restrictions on an owner’s eligibility?
No.
Q13. If a customer has an immediate question, where can they get further information?
The customer can contact their local Kia dealership or call Kia
’s Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800-3334KIA (4542), Monday through Friday, 5 AM to 6 PM Pacific Standard Time, or via the internet @ www.kia.com (Owner’s Section).

SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN KSDS SOFTWARE LOGIC IMPROVEMENT (SC200**1)
MY Model Engine Production Date Range Publication

This notice applies to your vehicle: (Insert VIN)
January 27, 2021
Dear Kia Forte and Forte Koup Owner:
Kia has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kia Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2014-2015 MY Forte and Forte Koup vehicles. The defect can result in an engine compartment fire while driving, thus increasing the risk of injury. Our records indicate that you own or lease one of the potentially affected vehicles.
What Is The Problem?
Kia has identified some vehicles that have experienced an engine compartment fire. To date, a cause of such fires due to a manufacturing or design defect has not been identified. Since an engine compartment fire while driving can occur for many different reasons, Kia
is conducting this recall to mitigate any unreasonable fire risk due to potential fuel leaking, oil leaking and/or engine damage.
NOTE: Depending on the condition of your vehicle’s engine, engine noise, illumination of Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) that may be related to an engine mechanical issue, illumination of Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light , fuel smell, burning smell, oil leaking, and/or smoke from the engine compartment can occur. An engine compartment fire increases the risk of injury.
Kia Will Inspect, Test, And If Necessary, Repair or Replace The Engine, At No Cost To You.
SC200
Kia has advised its authorized Kia
dealers to conduct an inspection of the engine compartment for any fuel and/or engine oil leaks. Dealers will also perform an engine test, and make any repairs, including engine replacement, if necessary. The estimated time required to complete the repair will be 2 to 4 hours, depending on your dealer’s schedule. We recommend that you contact your local Kia
dealer to schedule a service appointment by phone or online to minimize inconvenience.
In addition, Kia is currently working on the development of a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update for the engine control unit (ECU) in your vehicle that will prevent engine damage due to potential excessive connecting rod bearing wear. Once the software update is available, Kia
will send you another notice advising you to contact your Kia
dealer to have the software installed. Upon completion of the KSDS software update, Kia
will warrant any engine long block assembly repairs needed due to connecting rod bearing damage for 15 years/ 150,000 miles starting from the first date of service, whichever occurs first, for both new and used vehicle owners.
What Should You Do?
• If your vehicle displays any of the warning lights listed above, and/or if you notice a fuel smell, a burning/melting odor or smoke coming from the engine compartment, please contact Kia Roadside Assistance at 1-800-333-4542 (4Kia) to request to have your vehicle towed to the closest authorized Kia

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
(NHTSA Recall Number: 20V750)
This notice applies to your vehicle: (Insert VIN)
January 25, 2021
Dear Kia Soul Owner:
Kia has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kia Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2014-2015 MY Soul vehicles.
Kia has advised its authorized Kia dealers to conduct an inspection of the engine compartment for any fuel and/or engine oil leaks. Dealers will also perform an engine test, and make any repairs, including engine replacement, if necessary.
In addition, dealers will also perform a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update to the engine control unit (ECU) in your vehicle to prevent engine damage due to potential excessive connecting rod bearing wear. Upon completion of the KSDS software update, Kia will warrant any engine long block assembly repairs needed due to connecting rod bearing damage for 15 years/150,000 miles starting from the first date of service, whichever occurs first, for both new and used vehicle owners.
NOTE: Your vehicle may have already received the KSDS software update previously announced by Kia in late August 2020. As part of that product improvement campaign, Kia advised it would extend the warranty coverage for the engine sub-assembly (short block) to 10 years starting from the date of first service or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first for both new and used vehicle owners for excessive connecting rod bearing wear. That coverage is therefore being increased to 15 years/150,000 miles as part of this recall.
The estimated time required to complete the repair will be 2 to 4 hours, depending on your dealer’s schedule. We recommend that you contact your local Kia dealer to schedule a service appointment by phone or online to minimize inconvenience.
What Should You Do?
• If your vehicle displays any of the warning lights listed above, and/or if you notice a fuel smell, a burning/melting odor or smoke coming from the engine compartment, please contact Kia Roadside Assistance at 1-800-333-4542 (4Kia) to request to have your vehicle towed to the closest authorized Kia dealership.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
(Interim Notice)
(NHTSA Recall Number: 20V750)
This notice applies to your vehicle: (Insert VIN)
Since an engine compartment fire while driving can occur for many different reasons, Kia is conducting this recall to mitigate any unreasonable fire risk due to potential fuel leaking, oil leaking and/or engine damage.
Kia has advised its authorized Kia dealers to conduct an inspection of the engine compartment for any fuel and/or engine oil leaks. Dealers will also perform an engine test, and make any repairs, including engine replacement, if necessary. The estimated time required to complete the repair will be 2 to 4 hours, depending on your dealer’s schedule. We recommend that you contact your local Kia dealer to schedule a service appointment by phone or online to minimize inconvenience.
In addition, Kia is currently working on the development of a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update for the engine control unit (ECU) in your vehicle that will prevent engine damage due to potential excessive connecting rod bearing wear. Once the software update is available, Kia will send you another notice advising you to contact your Kia dealer to have the software installed. Upon completion of the KSDS software update, Kia will warrant any engine long block assembly repairs needed due to connecting rod bearing damage for 15 years/ 150,000 miles starting from the first date of service, whichever occurs first, for both new and used vehicle owners.
• In the interest of the safety of your passengers, as well as your own safety, please immediately contact your Kia dealership to arrange for the recall repair to be conducted.
• To find your nearest dealer, visit www.kia.com and click the “Find Dealer” button in the upper right corner (“Dealers” on a mobile device). You can also use the QR code below with your mobile device to access this

1 Associated Investigation
Non-crash Vehicle Fires
NHTSA ID: PE19004
Dated opened: March 29, 2019
In a letter dated June 11, 2018, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a safety defect investigation into non-collision related fires on model year (MY) 2011-2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe vehicles. In a letter dated July 24, 2018, CAS requested that MY 2010-2015 Kia Soul vehicles be added to the petition. CAS stated that there is a higher number of complaints to NHTSA regarding non-crash fires on these vehicles compared to other similar vehicles. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) had already opened a Recall Query (RQ17-003) on all Kia vehicles equipped with Theta II engines for engine failures that may cause stalling and fires. The query covers most of the petition subject Optima and Sorento vehicles but not any of the subject Soul vehicles.
On August 21, 2018, ODI opened a Defect Petition (DP18-003) to evaluate whether to grant or deny the CAS petition. ODI sent Information Request letters to Kia (September and October 2018) requesting information on all engine and non-engine related fires in the petition Kia vehicles. ODI performed extensive analysis on the information obtained from Kia. During the DP18-003 analysis, Kia initiated three additional safety recalls related to engine compartment fires on certain petitioned and non-petitioned vehicles (nearly 500,000 total vehicles: Recalls 18V-907, 19V-101, and 19V-120). Based on ODI’s review of the applicable materials, including responses to Information Requests sent to multiple manufacturers, Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ), and Early Warning Data, NHTSA has decided to grant the petition.
The petition is hereby granted. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of alleged defects relating to non-collision vehicle fires in the 2011-2014 Kia Optima, 2011-2014 Kia Sorento, and 2010-2015 Kia Soul. While prior recalls of vehicles covered by this PE have primarily related to engine fires, NHTSA’s Preliminary Evaluation is not limited to engine components and may cover additional vehicle systems or components as well.
Attached is a list of the reference numbers for the 244 VOQs cited above.
