Kia
Motors America (KIA
) is recalling certain 2020 Sedona vehicles. The battery positive (B+) terminal nut on the alternator may not have been tightened properly during assembly, possibly causing it to loosen over time.
Remedy
Kia
will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the alternator B+ terminal nut, tightening it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 14, 2020. Owners may contact Kia
customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia
’s number for this recall is SC192.

This bulletin provides information to inspect and, if necessary, tighten the Alternator B+ terminal nut on some 2020MY Sedona (YP) vehicles equipped with the 3.3L GDI engine and produced from August 1, 2019 through April 20, 2020. The Alternator B+ terminal ensures the electrical connection is maintained between the battery wire harness terminal plate and the Alternator B+ terminal, but the B+ terminal nut may not have been properly torqued during assembly. If the terminal nut is not properly torqued, it may loosen over time and come off, resulting in electrical arcing at the B+ terminal and possible fire. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
Inspection and Repair Procedure:
1. Open the hood and remove the engine cover (A).
2. Pull back the alternator B+ terminal cover (B).
3. Inspect the B+ terminal and confirm the nut (C) is properly secured by attempting to move the terminal end left to right.
Note: The alternator B+ terminal cable should be connected vertically (refer to the yellow dashed line).
If the cable end/nut is loose (FAIL), refer to ‘Repair Procedure’ on page 3.
If the cable end/nut is properly secured (PASS), the campaign is complete.
4. Reinstall the alternator B+ Terminal cover (B) and engine cover (A).
Repair Procedure:
1. Save radio presets.
2. Disconnect the battery Negative (-) terminal.
3. Torque the alternator B+ nut (C) to specification.
Torque Specification for nut (C):
8.7 lb.ft (11.8 N.m., 1.2 kgf.m)
Confirm the nut (C) is properly secured by attempting to move the terminal end left to right.
4. Reinstall the alternator B+ Terminal cover (B) and engine cover (A).

Q4. What is the concern with the Alternator B+ Terminal Nut?
The Alternator B+ terminal nut ensures that the electrical connection is maintained between the battery wire harness terminal plate and the Alternator B+ terminal. However, the Alternator B+ terminal nut may not have been properly tightened during assembly. If the terminal nut is not properly tightened, it may loosen over time and come off resulting in electrical arcing at the B+ terminal and possible fire.
Q5. Can you describe the recall campaign and fix?

will instruct authorized dealers to dealer to inspect and, if necessary, properly tighten the Alternator B+ terminal nut. Kia
will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia
’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 11, 2020. The work will be performed at Kia
’s expense at no cost to the customer.

KMA inspects subject 2020MY Sedona. Inspection identifies origin at the Alternator B+ terminal. KMA found terminal nut was missing. KMA provides Kia
Motors Corporation (KMC) vehicle inspection results and requests KMC to investigate.
March 20—April 9, 2020
KMC inspects connection of Alternator B+ terminal nut in in-stock vehicles at its Korean plants and ports to determine whether any terminal nuts were improperly torqued. No issue found.
March 27—May 18, 2020
KMA inspects connection of Alternator B+ terminal nut in U.S. port stock vehicles and finds certain vehicles with under torqued terminal nuts but no vehicles with missing nuts. KMA provides KMC inspection results.
April 8, 2020—June 29, 2020
KMC conducts driving tests in various conditions in attempts to duplicate issue and determine cause. First set of driving tests performed 4/8-4/28/2020 with Alternator B+ terminal nut properly torqued and incorrectly seated terminal plate. Arcing condition could not be duplicated. Second set of driving tests conducted 5/13-5/28/2020 with Alternator B+ terminal nut torqued manually without torqueing tool. Arcing condition could not be duplicated. Third set of driving tests conducted from 6/8-6/29/2020 without the Alternator B+ terminal nut installed. KMC confirms electrical arcing confirmed at B+ terminal area.

KMC decides to conduct a recall of the 2020MY Sedona. One customer complaint alleging fire reported. No known injuries.

has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety

Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 2020 MY Kia
Sedona Vehicles. The defect can result in the Alternator B+ terminal nut loosening over time and coming off, resulting in electrical arcing at the B+ terminal. Electrical arcing can result in a fire, which increases the risk of injury. Our records indicate that you own or lease one of the potentially affected vehicles.
What Is The Problem?
The Alternator B+ terminal nut ensures that the electrical connection is maintained between the battery wire harness terminal plate and the Alternator B+ terminal. The B+ terminal nut may have been improperly tightened during assembly. If the terminal nut is not properly tightened, it may loosen over time and come off, resulting in electrical arcing at the B+ terminal and possible fire.

Motors America, Inc., pursuant to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, is conducting a Safety Recall Campaign to inspect and, if necessary, properly torque the Alternator B+ terminal nut on some 2020 MY Kia
Sedona vehicles manufactured from August 1, 2019 through April 20, 2020. The Alternator B+ terminal nut ensures that the electrical connection is maintained between the battery wire harness terminal plate and the Alternator B+ terminal. However, the Alternator B+ terminal nut may not have been properly torqued during assembly. If the terminal nut is not properly torqued, it may loosen over time and come off, resulting in electrical arcing at the B+ terminal and possible fire which increases the risk of injury.

Sedona vehicle owners affected by this recall can be accessed on WEBDCS. Log onto the site, select the Campaigns Tab, click on Open Campaign Report in the left side menu, and select SC192 to generate the list.
Notices to the affected vehicle owners will be mailed on August 14, 2020. Please start performing the repairs immediately on any affected vehicles currently in your inventory.
