2011-2012 MY Kia Sedona Fuel Rail Chronology Basis of Safety Defect Determination 573.6(c)(6)

October 29, 2019 Kia Motors America, Inc. (KMA) identifies Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) alleging strong fuel smell from a 2011 Kia Sedona and subsequent fuel leaking from fuel rail.
November-December 2019 KMA reviews field and part sales data of fuel rail. KMA collects three (3) fuel rails from field for further evaluation. Visual inspection of collected parts reveals crack in fuel rail. KMA delivers the three (3) fuel rails to Kia Motors Corporation (KMC) for its evaluation and analysis.
January – February 2020 KMC conducts analysis and imaging of collected parts to determine cause of cracking. KMC evaluation suggests fuel rail crack may be from exposure of heat generated in the engine compartment under certain circumstances.
February 18, 2020 KMC makes decision to conduct recall due to potential risk of fire. 24 customer complaints of fuel rail leaking. No known fires, accidents or injuries due to fuel leaking from cracked fuel rail.
