TECH TIP: Oil Leak in Rear Main Seal Area
Symptom: An oil leak that appears to be in the rear main seal area.
Repair: Most oil leaks on this engine are found in the top of the engine, under the intake manifold. In some cases, oil may leak from the filter housings where they mate with the block, or from the oil pressure switch. Prior to removing the transmission, try using a borescope or mirror & flash light to check if oil is collecting under the intake manifold. If you cannot pinpoint the leak with dye, try connecting a smoke machine to the oil dipstick tube to check for smoke escaping from around or beneath the intake near the oil filter housing or the oil pressure switch.
