Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Reading

An inaccurate fuel gauge may result in the vehicle unexpectedly running out of fuel and stalling, increasing the risk of a crash.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Stinger vehicles. A software error in the instrument cluster may cause an inaccurate fuel gauge reading.



Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 10, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC219.

June 23, 2021 Kia North America (Kia NA) issues a Quality Information Report identifying replacement of multiple components in attempt to resolve customer complaint of inaccurate fuel amount displayed on instrument cluster and requests Kia Corporation (Kia HQ) to investigate.


June 24, 2021 Kia HQ requests Kia NA to collect parts for further evaluation.


June 25—September 16, 2021 Kia NA works to identify and collect potential related components at issue and ships six (6) instrument clusters and one (1) fuel sending unit to Kia HQ for further evaluation on September 16, 2021.


September 24—October 14, 2021 Kia HQ receives parts from Kia NA and works with supplier to evaluate issue.


October 14-15, 2021 Kia NA Safety Office conducts field data review analysis and identifies 16 warranty claims potentially related to inaccurate fuel gauge concern from 1/25/2021 to 9/13/2021.  Kia HQ advises Kia NA of potential fuel gauge software logic error by instrument cluster supplier may result in inaccurate fuel gauge display.


October 21-29, 2021 Kia NA Safety Office checks additional data sources and identifies ten (10) techline cases and three (3) customer complaints initiated from 12/11/2020 to 8/17/2021 potentially related to inaccurate fuel gauge concern.  Kia HQ continues to work with supplier to identify cause of potential fuel gauge software logic error and identifies issue occurred in a certain lot during production of instrument cluster assemblies at the supplier.


October 29, 2021 Kia NA decides to conduct safety recall.  No fatalities, injuries, crashes or fires.  Sixteen (16) warranty claims, ten (10) techline cases and three (3) customer complaints.
