SUBJECT:

OIL PAN & OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT FOR 2.0L NU MPI ENGINE (SC210)

This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the engine oil pan on some 2017-2018MY Forte (YDm) vehicles produced from June 5, 2017 through July 24, 2017 with a new one that includes magnets.  In addition, the oil filter in these vehicles is also to be replaced.  The subject vehicles may exhibit abnormal engine noise, an oil pressure warning lamp and/or MIL on due to the conditions described below. The engine oil pump contains a variable relief plunger that controls oil pressure.  Over time, normally occurring foreign particles that are not captured by the oil filter can become stuck in the plunger due to a sharp edge on the plunger, resulting in reduced oil pressure and engine lubrication.  If the vehicle is continually operated with this condition, the engine can be damaged and loss of motive power may occur, increasing the risk of a crash. Follow the procedure outlined in this publication to install the new engine oil pan and replace the oil filter with the parts listed in this bulletin. The new engine oil pan includes two (2) magnets to capture any foreign particles in the oil pan to prevent them from becoming stuck on the oil pump plunger. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

NOTICE

  • SST (09263 2E000 or K95U 1001G) to remove the oil filter.
  • SST (09215 3C000) to remove the oil pan

IMPORTANT

Removal of the oil screen outlined on KGIS is NOT required.

CAUTION

  • Do NOT turn the SST over abruptly without tapping as it can result in damage to the SST.
  • Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the lower crankcase and the oil pan.

Follow the outline on page 3 to install the new oil pan with magnets.

Installation Procedure:

1. Using a gasket scraper, remove the old sealant from the lower crankcase surfaces.
The sealant locations indicated on the oil pan (B) and the lower crankcase (D) must be free of harmful foreign materials, oil, dust, and moisture. Ensure the mating surface is oil free prior to applying RTV.

2. Apply RTV Silicone Gasket Maker (UM016 CH123) liquid gasket to the new oil pan 4-5mm wide as shown. A continuous bead of sealant should be applied to prevent any path of oil leakage.

3. Apply a 1.5-2.5mm wide strip of silicone to the circular sections (E) as shown.

Bead width of sealant:

  • Section (E): 1.5 – 2.5 mm (0.06 – 0.10 in.)

Note: Photo at right is for reference purposes only.

IMPORTANT

  • When applying  sealant  gasket, sealant must not protrude into the inside of the oil pan (leave a gap of 4-5 mm between sealant and inside shoulder of oil pan).
  • To prevent leakage of oil, apply sealant gasket on the inner threads of the bolt holes.
  • If the  sealant  is  applied  to  the bottom surface of the lower crankcase, it should be the same position as the oil pan.

4. After applying  liquid  sealant  on  the  oil  pan, assemble it to the engine block within 5 minutes after sealant was applied, including bolt torque completion in step 5 on the next page.

Bead Width of Sealant:

  • Whole section: 4.0 – 5.0 mm (0.16 – 0.20 in.) Sealant: RTV Silicone Gasket Maker (UM016 CH123)

5. Install the new oil pan (B). Uniformly tighten the oil pan retaining bolts in several passes.

Tightening torque for oil pan bolts:
104 – 121 lb.in (11.8 – 13.7 N.m)

6. Confirm the new oil drain plug (A)  with gasket is tightened to specification, and lower the vehicle.

Tightening torque for oil drain plug:
25.3 – 32.5 lb.ft (34.3 – 44.1 N.m)

7. Remove engine oil filler cap, fill engine with recommended engine oil specification, and reinstall engine oil cap.

Engine Oil Capacity: Total: 4.76 qt. (4.5L)

8. Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Ensure the engine oil gauge or light registers pressure and allow vehicle to warm up.

9. After engine is warm, shut off, and wait (5) minutes; then check oil level (level should be between the “L” and “F” marks on the dipstick). If the engine oil is low, check for leaks and inspect. Add oil up to the “F” mark, as necessary.

10. Reinstall under covers, before test driving to confirm no leaks, and proper vehicle operation.

IMPORTANT

Do NOT start the engine and do not pressurize the engine within 30 minutes after assembling the oil pan to the engine.

2017-2018MY Forte Engine Oil Pump Chronology
Basis of Safety Defect Determination 573.6(c)(6)

January 2021

While evaluating an engine issue involving certain 2020-2021 Soul and 2020 Seltos vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines, KMNA runs engine replacement claim data for the 2017-2018 Forte

(YDm) and 2019-2021 Forte (BDm) vehicles produced at the KiaeBay logo Mexico plant equipped with the same 2.0L Nu MPI engines. Results of engine replacement claims data through December 31, 2020 shows that instances of loss of motive power while driving are very low [2017-2018 Forte: 0.14%; 2019-2021 Forte: 0.02%]. KMNA sends claim data to KiaeBay logo Motors Corporation (KMC) for its review. KMNA continues to monitor.

February 2021

As part of its monitoring efforts, engine replacement warranty claim data is updated thru January 31, 2021. The data shows that the claim level fundamentally remained the same for instances of loss of motive power. [2017-2018 Forte: 0.15%; 2019-2021 Forte: 0.02%]. KMNA sends updated data to KMC.

March 2021

KMC reviews claim data for the Forte model and identifies an increased number of engine replacement claims during the June/July 2017 production period. KMC evaluates engine change history and identified that a change was made to oil pump plunger edge shape.  Further evaluation conducted to determine correlation of oil pump change and engine replacement claims and confirms correlation the with change. KMC shares information with KMNA.

KMNA evaluates KMC’s investigation results and conducts predictive analysis to confirm potential increase of engine replacement claims during the June/July production period identified by KMC.

April 6, 2021

Based on KMNA’s predictive analysis and change made by KMC to oil pump, KMNA decides to conduct recall as a preventative measure. No known crashes, injuries, fatalities or fires.
