Summary
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2020 Telluride vehicles. The seat belt assemblies in the front passenger, second, and/or third row seats may not tightly secure a child restraint system in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Remedy
Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace any incorrect seat belt assemblies. The repair will also include replacing the driver's seat belt which has a non-U.S. specified label, with a U.S. specification seat belt. The repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 30, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC181.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

SEAT BELT INSPECTION AND/OR REPLACEMENT (SC181) |
NOTICE
This bulletin has been revised to include additional information. New/revised sections of this bulletin are indicated by a black bar in the margin area.
This bulletin provides the procedure to inspect and, if necessary, replace the seat belt assemblies of some 2020MY Telluride (ON) vehicles produced from January 9, 2019 through August 5, 2019. Seat belt assemblies designed for Telluride vehicles for the non-U.S. market may have been inadvertently installed in the driver, front passenger, second and/or third row seats of the affected U.S. vehicles. The affected driver seat belt assemblies are non-U.S. specification seat belt assemblies. The affected front passenger, second and third row seat belt assemblies are not equipped with an automatic locking retractor (ALR) feature and do not comply with S7.1.1.5 (a) of FMVSS 208, ‘Occupant crash protection’ which requires that each designated seating position that is forward facing (except the driver’s position) have a seat belt assembly whose lap belt portion is lockable so that the seat belt assembly can be used to tightly secure a child restraint system.
Dealers are to have technicians inspect and, if incorrect seat belt assemblies are identified, replace them with correct ones as outlined in this bulletin. If an incorrect seat belt assembly is identified, the technician must open a Techline case and submit photos, and then replace with the correct seat belt(s) applicable to the vehicle. Before conducting the procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.
NOTICE
Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected vehicle until it has been repaired pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.
NOTICE
To assure complete customer satisfaction, always remember to refer to WebDCS Warranty Coverage (validation) Inquiry Screen (Service → Warranty Coverage → Warranty Coverage Inquiry) for a list of any additional campaigns that may need to be performed on the vehicle before returning it to the customer.

TSB: SC181 (Rev 2) Telluride (ON) August 2019
IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
(NHTSA Recall Number: 19V594)
This notice applies to your vehicle: (Insert VIN)
August 30, 2019
Dear Kia Telluride Owner:
Kia has identified a defect in your vehicle which relates to motor vehicle safety
This letter is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Kia Motors has determined a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 2020 MY Telluride vehicles that may not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 208, “Occupant crash protection.” The affected vehicles may contain non-U.S. specification driver seat belt assembly and/or non-automatic locking retractor (non-ALR) seat belt assemblies in the front passenger, second and/or third row seats, increasing the risk of injury to a child seat occupant in a crash. Our records indicate that you own or lease one of the potentially affected vehicles.
What Is The Problem?
Seat belt assemblies designed for Telluride vehicles in another market may have been inadvertently installed in the driver, front passenger, second and/or third row seats of some 2020 MY Telluride U.S. vehicles. The affected seat belt assemblies for the driver seat are non-U.S. specification seat belt assemblies. The affected front passenger, second and third row seat belt assemblies are not equipped with an automatic locking retractor (ALR) feature and do not comply with FMVSS 208, Occupant crash protection. If a non-ALR seat belt is used to secure a child seat in the front passenger, second or third row seats, it may not tightly secure a child restraint system, increasing the risk of injury to a child seat occupant in a crash.
Kia will inspect the driver, front passenger, second and third row seat belt assemblies and if any incorrect seat belt assembly(s) is identified, the dealer will replace it with the correct one at no cost to you.
Kia has advised its authorized dealers to inspect the seat belt assemblies for the driver, front passenger, and second and third row seat belt assemblies. If an incorrect seat belt assembly is identified, the dealer will replace it with the correct one. The work will be performed at Kia’s expense at no cost to you.
What Should You Do?
- In the interest of the safety of your passengers, as well as your own safety, please immediately contact your Kia dealer to arrange for the recall repair to be conducted. The estimated time required to inspect and perform necessary repairs will be approximately one (1) to five (5) hours. However, your vehicle may be needed longer; therefore, we recommend scheduling a service appointment to minimize any inconvenience.
- If you notice that the seat belt assemblies in the front passenger, second or third row seating positions do not have the ALR feature, (see photos below) do not use those seating positions to install a child restraint system until you have had this recall repair performed.
