Summary

KiaeBay logo America, Inc. (KiaeBay logo) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Telluride vehicles. The front power seat motor may overheat due to a stuck power seat slide knob, which can result in a fire while parked or driving.

 

Remedy

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will install a bracket for the power seat switch back covers and replace the seat slide knobs, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 30, 2024. Owners may contact KiaeBay logo customer service at 1-800-333-4542. KiaeBay logo’s number for this recall is SC316.

December 11, 2023—December 21, 2023
KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office receives dealer Techline case involving a 2023MY Telluride with complaint of smoke coming from underneath driver’s seat.

KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office engineer inspects the vehicle and finds evidence of an overheated seat tilt motor with melting at connector. KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office collects subject parts for investigation.

January 3, 2024
KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office receives dealer Techline case involving a 2020MY Telluride with complaint of smoke in the passenger compartment. Dealer inspection finds isolated melting and minimal concentrated damage to the passenger side seat tilt motor. KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office requests subject parts from dealer for further analysis.

KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office ships collected parts to KiaeBay logo Georgia for further investigation by KiaeBay logo Georgia and KiaeBay logo Corporation (KiaeBay logo HQ).

March 4, 2024
KiaeBay logo HQ provides preliminary investigation findings to KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office of parts evaluation and identifies knob damage and stuck seat switches with continuous motor operation. KiaeBay logo HQ suspects knob damage due to external force. KiaeBay logo HQ and KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office continue to investigate issue.

March 25, 2024—March 27, 2024
KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office receives customer complaint involving a 2023MY Telluride with report of “driver seat caught on fire while driving”. No injuries reported.
Dealer subsequently provides photos indicating under-seat fire with origin in area of driver’s side seat tilt motor.

April 8, 2024—May 23, 2024
KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office, KiaeBay logo HQ, and supplier inspect customer complaint vehicle. Inspection results identify origin at driver side seat tilt motor. Seat switch back cover found dislodged and seat slide knob found stuck in the upward position. KiaeBay logo’s evaluation identifies sticking seat slide knob likely due to external impact to the knob. KiaeBay logo NA begins process to repurchase inspected vehicle for further investigation.

Following completion of repurchase, KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office coordinates with dealer to ship subject parts to the Safety Test and Investigation Lab (STIL) for further investigation.

KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office receives CT scan results of subject parts. KiaeBay logo HQ confirms CT scan images show dislodged seat switch back cover can cause internal misalignment of the micro switches and continuous motor operation.

May 29, 2024
KiaeBay logo NA Safety Office decides to recall certain 2020-2024MY Telluride vehicles. Seven (7) unique incidents [one (1) localized under-seat fire; six (6) localized melting of seat tilt motor (dates of receipt 8/30/2022—3/23/2024)]. No injuries, crashes, or fatalities.
