Summary

Kia Motor Company (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Optima, 2012-2014 Sorento and 2011-2013 Sportage vehicles.

Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.

Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine assembly, and replace the engine if necessary, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin May 25, 2017.

Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

Kia’s number for this recall is SC147.

  1. 2011 KIA Optima – the service engine light came on then the vehicle stalled, the codes were read, the service organization followed the sequence steps – first an oil change, then change the CVVT Solenoids; do check to see if problem corrected, if not proceed changing more parts. Cost $$$ – after Solenoids replaced, the Engine had a severe knock, stop work, RESEARCH – found vehicle on RECALL SC147. KIA Dealer notified and was aware vehicle needed to be towed. KIA did not offer to tow. Towed vehicle to KIA. KIA replaced Engine per SC147. Submitted for reimbursement for prior work and tow, KIA DENIED. Was never notified of recall. KIA Customer Service now states that KIA would have paid for tow if asked in the beginning. The Engine Service Codes and recommended repairs seems to be bogus, as the KIA Rep indicated the Solenoids are not part of SC147 although without the solenoids having a CLEAN and CLEAR passage then the engine oil does not flow, the passage ways were clogged with metal flakes but according to KIA their not part of SC147. Not to mention, KIA replaces the block of the engine, uses the existing intake (upon removal is exposed to the elements (dust, dirt, etc), ask KIA to clean the intake/injection system before reinstalling ($$), ask KIA to reimburse – was told that this was not part of SC147. So, according to KIA, all dirty or exposed parts reused is just the way it is and is a customers decision to have CLEAN parts and to pay for the cleaning.

  2. I have a KIA Optima 2015, and I’m having problems with kia fixing my vehicle. My KIA Optima came with a 2.4 engine and is burning motor oil. I would like to know if my engine could be one of those engines. I had to replace spark plugs and PVC Valve and flush my motor three time at Zamora KIA of Yuma, AZ. Thank you for your attention to my question. Sal
